US talking to Hamas?

My friends at Power Line point to this article which makes it quite clear that the United States is talking to Hamas.
A senior Hamas figure said Friday that official and unofficial US sources have asked the Islamist group to refrain from making any statements regarding contacts with Washington, this following reports that a senior American official is due to arrive in an Arab country in the coming days to relay a telegram from the Obama Administration.

The Hamas figure told the London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper that the Americans fear discussing the talks publicly would "rouse the Jewish lobby and other pressure groups in the US and cause them to pressure the administration to suspend all talks with Hamas."

The Hamas figure, who is close to Ismail Haniyeh, the prime minister of the government in Gaza, added, "This is a sensitive subject. The Americans don't want anyone to comment on it because this would catch the attention of pressure groups (in the US) and cause problems."

He said Hamas' exiled leadership in Damascus is overseeing the contacts behind closed doors.

On Wednesday a Washington-based Arabic newspaper quoted a senior official as saying that an American envoy is scheduled to meet with Hamas representatives in an Arab country and hand them a letter from the Obama Administration.

According to the report, the official said Washington has no choice but to work with Hamas due to its influence in the Arab and Islamic world.
That last paragraph sounds like Hamas self-promotion, but the rest of it unfortunately seems plausible. Scott Johnson adds:
There's an internal logic to the trajectory of Obama administration foreign policy that makes this brief Ynetnews article all too plausible.
There is indeed. Recall this post from earlier this month. I think it's fair to say that Obama prefers dealing with the 'extremists.'

I would bet that the Obama administration is dealing with Hamas. The question is whether the pro-Israel community should consider blowing those contacts out into the open. The only reason I hesitate to say that we should is the likelihood that at least some people would not be upset about the US dealing with Hamas - especially among the J Streeters and their ilk.

This needs the exposure of large amounts of daylight. This article was on Drudgereport, which usually has the effect of providing this daylight.

There is no valid reason for Obami to be talking to hamas. There is no legal cover they can use to do so. Hamas is a terror entity. Anyone caught with their hand in that cookie jar needs to lose that hand.

Blow it open. Make sure all of the blogosphere, a.k.a the real news, knows about this, and let the MFM/MSM flounder in their own made-up news.

J-Street, Israel's treasonous Left and the Eurotrash would probably welcome the disclosure of such talks. Real peace is not and has never been their objective.
