US to save Israel from itself?

The United States is opposed to Israel trading hundreds of terrorists for Gilad Shalit (for the wrong reason - the US is afraid it will weaken the good terrorists of Fatah). That opposition may prevent Israel from making a lopsided deal.
"It could be that the United States will save us from ourselves and give the government the strength to withstand internal pressure. If it happens it will be for the wrong reasons. The USA opposes the deal not because it is concerned about encouraging the kidnapping of additional soldiers and not because it breaks a clear position of not giving into terror, but instead because it weakens Abu Mazen [AL:. Mahmoud Abbas].

So its true that the USA is still captive to the concept that it is possible to cut a deal with Abu Mazen (a ridiculous and mistaken concept) but despite this, its policies point to American intelligence assessments that the release of the terrorists will significantly strengthen Hamas in Gaza. Is this what those marching to Jerusalem demanding the release of over a thousand Hamas terrorists with Jewish blood on their hands want?"

[excerpt translated by IMRA]
Those marching to Jerusalem don't care about the price. They believe that a deal has to be made at any price. That's reckless.

There are those who believe that Netanyahu will hold firm against the demonstrators and that Hamas will understand that a deal cannot be done at any price, and will become more reasonable. I would not bet on Netanyahu holding firm (unless Obama forces him to) and I would not bet on Hamas becoming reasonable in any event. They have waited four years and they will wait longer.

Hamas sees that Israel can be forced to capitulate if holds fast. And over two decades of Oslo, Israel's politicians have been conditioned to choose surrender as the route of least resistance without even considering any other options. That has to be changed if Israel is to survive. Let's be blunt: Hamas committed a war crime by abducting Gilad Shalit and holding him against his will. There is NO reason in the world for Israel to legitimate and reward that kind of conduct. I am opposed to a deal that undermines Israel's security. No deal is preferable to a dishonorable deal that rewards evil, like Hamas.
