Italian UNIFIL contingent finds plastic explosives near base
The Italian UNIFIL contingent found plastic explosives in a garbage truck near its Tebnin base in southern Lebanon on Sunday. The two persons who were in the truck were turned over to the Lebanese security forces."The explosives were hidden in a garbage truck trying to enter the Tebnin base in southern Lebanon, which is the main headquarter of the Italian contingent," a UN source, who requested anonymity, told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA). "The truck was driven by two Lebanese men who are now (with) the Lebanese authorities," the source said, adding that "a small amount of explosives" was found in the truck.
If this were the only thing that had happened it wouldn't be a big deal. But when you combine it with the firing on Israel last week and UNIFIL finding rockets the night before the Gaza operation and again this week, it's starting to look serious.A sniffer dog had detected what the statement said was "a moderate quantity of substance, presumably plastic explosive” hidden in a tool box in the truck, as the truck tried to enter the base in Tebnin.
Italy has 2,500 troops in southern Lebanon, which was the largest contingent working within UNIFIL. There were several attacks on UNIFIL in South Lebanon, including a car bomb that killed six members of UNIFIL’s Spanish battalion in June 2007.
Last week, UNIFIL announced a state of alert in southern Lebanon.

Are you telling me the UNIFIL has CHECKPOINTS to protect them from the attacks of fanatical beasts?! How shocking! Why, they are no better than those Israelis who "oppress" the Paleostinians! //SARC=OFF//
Its amazing how quickly the UN swings into action when its their personnel's lives that are under threat.
After 2 years of looking the other way, UNIFIL is only now finding explosives.
I'm shocked!
