Video: Morning call to prayer, Gaza, January 12, 2009

Those of us who live near a mosque (as I do) learn to sleep through the early morning call of the muzzein urging the faithful to come to prayer. This video shows the early morning call to prayer in Gaza on the morning of January 12. For the first 1:40 you will hear the call to prayer (all you can make out is Allahu Akhbar unless your Arabic is good) and a very loud rooster. Then you will hear a different sound. After you vote for me (below the video), I will explain to you what that sound is.

Let's go to the videotape.

If you have not voted in the last 24 hours, please go to this link and vote for Israel Matzav as the Best Midsize blog in the 2008 Weblog Awards.

The sound you heard from the 1:40 mark on along with the muzzein and the rooster was the sound of gunfire from Apache helicopters. You will also note that the video went black as soon as the shooting started. That's because the lights you saw were city lights. The first call of the muzzein is around 90 minutes before sunrise (an early alot ha'shachar (dawn) for those of you who are Jewish and familiar with that concept). Yes, contrary to what you have been led to believe, the 'Palestinians' have electricity. They shut it off when the helicopters came.

And now they have gunfire from Apache helicopters too. Heh.

Thank you for the video and a great post!

I work with Mercy Corps, an international nonprofit organization providing emergency relief to the Gaza Strip for the last two weeks.

Yesterday, as Israel announced stepped-up attacks inside Gaza, Mercy Corps continued to distribute emergency aid to families displaced by the fighting.

On Sunday, staff and volunteers distributed food boxes to 180 families in Khan Younis, and delivered another $7,000 worth of mattresses, blankets, powdered milk and other relief items to families in Rafah.

Staff in Jerusalem, Egypt and Gaza are working to gather additional supplies and distribute them to families in need.

Best, Kathleen

Kathleen,

If you are managing to distribute aid to individual families without being hijacked by Hamas and without getting in the IDF's way, more power to you.
