'Settlement freeze' extension?

Israel Radio is citing an al-Hayat report on Thursday morning that claims that the Americans have proposed a three-month extension to the 'settlement freeze' until year's end. What will that accomplish other than postponing the debate?

Well, there's another part to the proposal that is getting much less play in the media. According to the other part of the proposal, Israel and the 'Palestinians' will reach agreement on borders within that three-month period, and then there won't be a need to discuss a 'settlement freeze' in three months because Israel will be able to build in whatever areas have been agreed to with the 'Palestinians.'

Forgetting that the 'Palestinians' had nine months to do this sort of thing and refused to come to the table, Israel should reject this proposal outright for a different reason. The 'Palestinians' only want to discuss borders, Jerusalem and 'refugees' in that order. For Israel, the top priority is security, and discussing borders in the absence of an agreement about security is a dangerous exercise.

Prime Minister Netanyahu can undoubtedly see that. But will he stand up to the Americans?

We can only hope Israel says "no". If the Palestinians continue to issue ultimatums, there is no point to further talks. And postponing construction only delays the day the Palestinians have to accept the revanants as a fact of life. If they think they don't have to give, then there will be no peace. The Americans indulging them in their temper tantrums is not a good sign for the future.

What could go wrong indeed
