Olmert snatches defeat from the jaws of victory, capitulates to Hamas

Israel's Prime Minister Ehud K. Olmert has once again done the almost-impossible. With Hamas reeling from several days of IDF and IAF pounding, Olmert went and offered them a hudna this evening (Wednesday). A hudna will give Hamas time to regroup and re-arm, and although they are unlikely to formally accept a hudna with the 'Zionist entity' it appears likely that they will accept one de facto in order to live to fight another day.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert made clear Wednesday, a day after he met with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, that quiet in Sderot would bring quiet in Gaza - a clear indication that the current IDF operations are not intended to topple Hamas.

"Our forces are not operating because we want to, but because we have to," Olmert said at Wednesday's security cabinet meeting, called to define Israel's goals in the Gaza Strip. "If they stop shooting at our civilian population, we would not have to respond."
This also explains two other stories. Earlier in the day, it was reported that foreign minister Tzipi Feigele Livni was torn between 'the two Ehuds,' with Barak wanting an all-out attack against Hamas and Olmert wanting more limited action. (That story is no longer on the Post's web site). Olmert - as usual - was trying to stop Israel from defeating the 'Palestinians.'

The other story this explains is Barak's bizarre proposal to evacuate 'Palestinian civilians' from Gaza City to southern Gaza in order to permit an attack on the Hamas terrorists. It seems obvious now that Barak was trying (unsuccessfully) to buy off Olmert's objections to the operation.

Olmert has to go - before he takes the country down with him. The last thing Israel needs now is a hudna that will Hamas to regroup and re-arm and fight another day.

Ehud Olmert's aversion to defending the country is obvious. At the present time, there doesn't seem to be a way to bring him down and he's shown he's a master of political survival. He can do what's necessary to take the heat off him but nothing more than that. Of course, both Labor and Shas could bring his government to and end but that would require them to show more courage than we've seen so far. And the rockets will continue to fall on Sderot and Ashkelon because Israelis have no direct influence upon their Prime Minister and his policies.

Olmert is a traitorous appeaser, who has managed to make the IDF look impotent. His government needs to fall apart and a real leader needs to be elected. I was saying the same thing Monday- http://thoughtsbysteve.blogspot.com/2008/03/israeli-traitor-olmert-orders-abrupt.html

In addition, the Israeli government is looking to do nothing. There are reports Egypt is mediating a hudna, which of course would do nothing to eliminate Hamas' massive arsenal but prohibit Israel from striking back. Olmert is content with living with in effect an Iranian proxy on Israel's southern border as long as it refrains from shooting rockets at Israel. Its bad news. But even bad news has a blessing in disguise. By giving the Hamas regime a renewed lease on life, Olmert has delivered a body blow to the two state solution and weakened Mahmoud Abbas and Fatah. All that's the keeping the "good" terrorists of Fatah in power are IDF forces in Judea and Samaria. Guess who is going to object to their removal. Even through abject fools like Olmert, G-d is helping to save Israel even though it doesn't appear like that from our present vantage point.

What's happening in Sderot and Ashkelon today?

Ynetnews has confirmed this morning that Ehud Olmert has been looking for excuses to do nothing. First it was the winter weather. Now its Israel's Egyptian friends. The same ones who have armed and built up Hamas and are now trying to convince Israel to accept a hudna. Olmert has no intention of reoccupying Gaza. He will do whatever it takes to keep himself in power, including an under the table deal with Hamas, even if it contradicts all of his previous statements about driving it from power.

In the meantime, the residents of Sderot and Ashkelon can go fly kites.
