Abu Mazen announces he'll resume 'peace talks'

'Moderate' 'Palestinian' President Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen announced on Wednesday that he will resume 'peace talks' with Israel despite its war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday said he would resume peace talks with Israel, backing off a threat to boycott negotiations until Israel reaches a truce with Hamas militants in Gaza.

"The peace process is a strategic choice and we have the intention of resuming the peace process," he said in a statement. He did not say when talks would restart, but visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in Jerusalem that a US general overseeing implementation of "the road map" peace plan would hold his first joint meeting with Israelis and Palestinians next week.

Abbas suspended talks earlier this week to protest Israel's military crackdown in Gaza. Earlier Wednesday, he said he would not resume talks until a truce was reached.
No word yet on what Condi offered Abu for this 'concession.'

Half of Jerusalem as a quid pro quo? Abbas said he intended to resume the talks. But he has no real interest in a three state solution that would give Hamas the opportunity to replace him down the road. Why would he want an agreement to please an American Administration that will be out of office in ten months? Its a very good question. To get him to even sign a paper agreement, Ehud Olmert would have to make very significant concessions, most notably on Jerusalem. Its not like Abbas can offer Israel an end to the conflict.
