Why the surprise? This is entirely in keeping with J Street's anti-Israel agenda.

Speaking of the anti-Israel lobby...

A group called the 'US campaign to end the Israeli occupation' is dragging the ad above around Washington DC this week, following delegates from the AIPAC convention as they attempt to lobby Congress.
“At a time when the sequester is cutting billions of dollars from programs to help those in need, it is grotesque that AIPAC is lobbying Congress this week for ever-increasing amounts of military aid to Israel, especially as these U.S. weapons are used by Israel—in violation of U.S. laws—to abuse Palestinian human rights,” stated Josh Ruebner, National Advocacy Director of the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation.

A three-day mobile truck ad has been tasked with following AIPAC attendees during their conference as they lobby Members of Congress for more weapons for Israel.

But, the ad show, planned to be showcased on Monday, will be set up at three Washington D.C Metro train platforms looks at the U.S. budgetary trade-offs taking place at the expense of the country’s local community needs.

“We see visual media as an essential tool in communicating marginalized social justice issues to a mainstream audience. We hope that this ad campaign will spur U.S. taxpayers to question more actively where their money is being spent at such a critical time,” said Ahmad Barclay, Lead Information Architect with Visualizing Palestine.

...

AIPAC’s conference will focus instead on pushing for a Congressional legislation that would designate Israel as a “major strategic ally” of the United States. If enacted and adopted, the legislation will give Israel a status that no other nation on earth enjoys with America.

It is also reported that the legislation will make it easy for Israel to obtain a U.S. approval for a strike against Iran.
I doubt that any legislation is going to make it 'easy' to obtain a green light for a strike on Iran. Congress isn't the commander in chief of the US armed forces, and an order to stand down (or not stand down) in the face of an Israeli attack against Iran would not come from Congress. Moreover, it's no secret that the US can do a far better job of destroying Iran's nuclear capability than we can, and the hope here is that the US will do so, because it's in the US's interest to do so.

As to the major strategic ally status, I could not find this anywhere online, but if I recall correctly, Menachem Begin raised the issue with Ronald Reagan 30 years ago, so it's not exactly new.

'Israel lobby' author Stephen Walt tells State Department why US foreign policy fails

On Friday, a few days after Chuck Hagel was confirmed as Secretary of Defense by the Senate, the State department heard from Stephen Walt, co-author of the paranoid screed that claims that the mysterious 'Israel lobby' controls the world. Walt's topic was the failure of American foreign policy (Hat Tip: Ricky G).
Stephen Walt, coauthor of The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy and professor of international affairs at Harvard University, was the featured speaker at the Secretary’s Open Forum on Friday afternoon. His topic: “Top reasons American foreign policy fails,” according to a copy of the event flyer posted in the hallways of Foggy Bottom.
It is unclear how high the U.S.-Israel relationship ranked on Walt’s list.
One State Department insider provided the announcement flyer to the Free Beacon and expressed concern that the Department would host such a divisive figure.
Walt’s speech, which took place as Secretary of State John Kerry traveled overseas on his first diplomatic tour, came days after the Senate confirmed Chuck Hagel as secretary of Defense on a sharply divided vote of 58-41. Walt emerged as a strong supporter of Hagel’s nomination, defending the former Nebraska GOP senator’s remarks that the “Jewish lobby” “intimidates” elected officials on Capitol Hill.

...

Walt celebrated Hagel’s confirmation in an item posted on his Foreign Policy magazine blog two days before his State Department remarks, while cautioning his followers that “it would be a huge mistake to conclude that the lobby’s clout has been broken and that Obama will now be free to chart a new course.”
The person who chooses speakers for the State Department's open forum is answerable directly to Secretary of State John FN Kerry. Aren't you glad that we reelected President Hussein Obama and that US foreign policy is now being run by the anti-Semitic three stooges? What could go wrong?

Hagel gets coveted 9/11 truther endorsement

Chuck Hagel has now won the coveted 9/11 truther endorsement for Secretary of Defense.
Noted 9/11 Truther Ray McGovern endorsed former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R., Neb.) to be President Barack Obama’s next Defense Secretary in an op-ed in the Baltimore Sun Thursday.

...

McGovern—who endorsed the book 9/11 and American Empire (Vol. 1): Intellectuals Speak Out for providing “compelling evidence … that the 9/11 attacks were themselves orchestrated by [the George W. Bush] administration precisely so they could be thus exploited”—has blamed Israel for problems in the Middle East and promotes the USS Liberty conspiracy theory. He delivered a speech last year on Israel and Iran that implied there was an Israeli conspiracy to deny Obama a second term. McGovern has also supported Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
It is not known if the White House solicited the 9/11 Truther to defend Hagel’s potential nomination.
...

Endorsements of Hagel in the past two weeks have come from the Iranian state propaganda outlet PressTV, the Palestinian advocacy group J Street, co-author of the conspiracy book The Israel Lobby Stephen Walt, disgraced anti-Semitic former ambassador Chas Freeman, and Daily Beast blogger Peter Beinart, an advocate for the Boycott, Divest, and Sanction movement against Israel.
They're really coming out of the woodwork now, aren't they?

Sorry but I don't agree. There is an awful lot of evidence aside from Miller's interview with Hagel. But get a load of the next segment. This is the American Left.

Let's go to the videotape.

Top House Dem Engel: Hagel has 'endemic hostility' toward Israel

In a Friday interview on C-Span, Representative Eliot Engel (D-NY), the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he has a real problem with potential Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel's 'endemic hostility to Israel' (Hat Tip: Memeorandum).
In an interview Friday taped for C-SPAN's Newsmakers, conducted jointly by The Cable and Politico, Engel said that Hagel's record on Israel and Iran make him a poor choice to lead the military. In particular, Engel said he was irked by Hagel's reference to the "Jewish lobby" in an interview with former official Aaron David Miller. (Miller supports Hagel's nomination.)
"I think that remark is troublesome, it's problematic. It shows at the very best a lack of sensitivity, at the very worst perhaps a prejudice. And I'm concerned about it, I'm concerned about the nomination," Engel said. "If I were doing the appointing, I would not appoint Chuck Hagel."
Engel, who represents the Bronx, Rockland, and Westchester, said he has been hearing a lot of opposition to the potential Hagel nomination from his constituents. He also said that Hagel's activities related to Israel, including his statements on Hamas and Israel's influence in Washington, show a pattern of "hostility."
"It seems there is some kind of an endemic hostility towards Israel and that's troublesome to me and troublesome to a lot of people," Engel said. "In the sensitive post of secretary of defense, those are warning bells. Those are red lights."
Obama should have the privilege of picking his own team, Engel said, but he predicted that Obama will pass over Hagel to avoid the controversy.
"I think [the president] knows that the Hagel nomination potentially is a problem," he said.
Still waiting for similar sentiments from Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY)  and Bob Menendez (D-NJ), both of whom do have a vote.

How the anti-Israel lobby lies, AIPAC edition

An anti-AIPAC video was floating around the internet yesterday. Elder of Ziyon decided to - ahem - annotate it.

Let's go to the videotape.

And in case you're wondering about the obnoxious sounding narrator, Daled Amos tells me via email....
The voice belongs to Anthony Lawson, "retired international-prize-winning commercials director, cameraman, ad agency creative director and voice over. He used to be known for shooting humorous commercials, but doesn’t find much to laugh about, with the way the world is going, these days." Among the things he has written is A Little Known Fact About the 9/11 Planes, where he concludes:
I would like to stress that the identity of the planes is not the only reason why the 9/11 Commission's findings should be regarded as invalid, and its members found guilty, at the very least, of gross oversights in the collection of the evidence which was used in the writing of its Final Report. Even a cursory look at the visual evidence of the collapsing World Trade Center's Twin Towers and WTC 7 should have instilled grave doubts about the findings of some of the experts from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST.

But, for my money, the real smoking guns were, and still are, the four aircraft that were used as weapons on that terrible day, and for them not to have been identified breaks every rule in any book which seeks to teach the art of solving crimes.
An indication of the caliber of the man and his work.

His name came up on this list last year in connection with another video ANTHONY LAWSON-MORE ABOUT ISRAELI BARBARISM, that appeared on the Gilad Atzmon blog.
I discussed Atzmon at length here.
