Haifa law school skips HaTikva (our national anthem)
At the University of Haifa's law school graduation on Thursday, there was something missing. HaTikva, Israel's national anthem (link in Hebrew). The university claims that it is 'investigating' why the anthem, 'which is played at every university activity,' was left out. Students speculated that it was due to the large number of Arab students in the university. Instead of playing the anthem, students were asked to rise to release balloons into the air.
What could go wrong?

Hatikvah mentions the "Jewish soul" - I understand it being a form of political correctness that's not in vogue these days.
And of course Orthodox Jews don't like its reference to being a "free people in our land," i.e, an allusion to the Jew being free of mitzvot. Its should be a "holy nation," for who else where the Jews created to serve?
There's much to criticize about Hatikvah but its emphasis on the Jewish longings for Zion go back far longer than even secular Zionism. And I can see why that upsets some people. The HaRav still endorsed Jews singing it, for there is a level of holiness in every Jew, even in those ignorant of G-d!
Hatikvah is not something for the University Of Haifa to decide is no longer in keeping with the times.
Maybe Haifa University shouldn't receive funding from the state if it can't accept the state's symbols.
The leftist profs in the law school would hav eno problem at all had they sung Baldi Baladi! Or maybe even the Horst Wessel song!
Not a dime for academic treason!
The ultra-leftist law school profs at Haifa U would have no problem at all had students sung Baladai Baladi at the ceremony. Maybe not even if they had sung the Horst Wessel Song. After all, THOSE would not offend Arab students !
No a dime for academic treason!!
