38 years since the Munich Olympic massacre

Sunday was 38 years since the Munich Olympic massacre. Here is part of ABC News' nightly news broadcast from September 6, 1972, which dealt almost completely with the Olympics (ABC had the broadcast rights to the Olympics).

Let's go to the videotape.

And here's an interview from September 5, 1972 with Tuvia Sokolsky, the Israeli weight lifting coach, who escaped that day.

Let's go to the videotape.

And here's a longer interview with Sokolsky in Hebrew - there are English subtitles, but they are difficult to see. The interview is from Israeli television.

Let's go to the videotape.

Yes, ABC had exclusive broadcast rights... and made the immoral decision to broadcast live everything that was going on at the Olympic village, including the German police efforts to get into the building where the hostages were being held.

It's hard to know what was most shameful in all of this, but Germany's decision to release the terrorists who were apprehended alive has to be right up there.
