Even Shimon Peres can't find a saving grace
For the last fifteen years, Shimon Peres has been the perpetual optimist, telling us that a 'new Middle East' was just around the corner and that peace was on its way. Words like 'delusional' and 'detached from reality' often accompanied descriptions of Peres' optimism in this blog and elsewhere. But although Peres tried to put the best face on his Tuesday meeting with American President Barack Hussein Obama - claiming that there was 'no space' between Israel and the United States - even Peres apparently recognizes that our one-time alliance with the United States is likely suspended until January 2013 - and maybe for longer. But in a sign of the differences between the views of the two new governments, in an earlier meeting with Vice President Joseph Biden, Peres said ending natural growth in settlements was a non-starter.I hope the morons who constitute the 79% of American Jewry who still support Obama are pleased - because you're next in line after us.
"Israel cannot instruct settlers in existing settlements not to have children or get married," Peres said.
In comments before the American Israel Public Affairs Committee earlier in the day, Biden said that settlement expansion must stop, and called on Palestinians and the Arab world to make "meaningful gestures" to advance peace.
Peres also rejected the idea of "linkage" between the Palestinian and Iranian issues, two topics the US administration has frequently mentioned together.

Though Israel has repeatedly expressed its concern that America's talks with Iran will last too long, allowing Teheran to master nuclear technology, Peres said the issue of a time frame was misleading.
He explained that it was impossible to "set a clock," because events were "fluid and volatile" and would dictate the pace, instead of preset timelines.
But earlier on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman reportedly declared that action would need to be taken if three months of diplomacy elapsed with no results.

Peres shouldn't be surprised of what the end result of Oslo would be. If he didn't expect this from America, he's stupider than I thought. And no amount of Israeli concessions to the US will change the view of those in the Obama Administration who are determined to end the "special relationship" with Israel.
Saving grace, indeed.
