Video: IDF soldiers with captured weapons and terrorists

If you haven't voted in the last 24 hours, please vote for Israel Matzav (that's me) as Best Midsize blog in the 2008 Weblog Awards by going here.

This video is of IDF soldiers with captured weapons and terrorists. Lots of blindfolded terrorists. The narration is in Hebrew. He says that they have adequate supplies (unlike in Lebanon two and a half years ago) and although it's cold at night, they're 'managing.' Morale is high. Sounds good to me.

Let's go to the videotape.

Isn't it against the Geneva Conventions to show prisoners on television? Also, do your fellow Israelis get the Warner Wolf reference?

Porterhouse, what the Geneva convention refers to is putting POWs on "display" for the purpose of public humiliation, an example would be a parade where the captors gloat and the POWs are humiliated.

Porterhouse, why are you concerned about the Geneva Conventions for the Hamas prisoners and none for Gilad Shalit?

Broomer, you can't logically assume that I lack concern for anyone based on my post. I have simply raised the issue of Israel televising prisoners. Clearly Hamas pays no attention to international law. But that doesn't excuse Israel from its obligations. All parties must be held to the same standards.

The Geneva conventions do not cover terror groups, only armies.

BTW: You're in the lead with 956 votes.

Porterhouse is right. Bagua, this *is* putting POWs on display for the purposes of public humiliation. We celebrate the IDF's victory here; we're parading them to be laughed at. It's not fair and it's not right, but we have to hold ourselves to a higher moral standard.

Non-uniformed terrorist combatants aren't covered by the GC.

They can be taken out and summarily executed, which is what we should do with the scum after we've milked them for intel.

Whine away, animal lovers. Boo hoo.

Let me make myself clear. As far as I'm concerned, the GCs, as they are today, can be chucked into the history garbage heap. It was never designed to handle anything but the gentlemanly aftermath of WWI. The GCs didn't anticipate the sub-human attrociousness of the Nazis, and similarly knows nothing at all of the beastial viciousness of Islamic Jihad.

Who says? I don't.

Carl, great video!

Eliyahu, I disagree with you but that's because I view Jonah's "moral standard" as lower, not higher.

It's time to start calling a spade a spade.

Shy Guy, I guess you don't appreciate the irony of referring to other people as animals when that very argument is used as an excuse to persecute and kill Jews.

Porterhouse and Jonah,

I don't know how you can humiliate someone when no one can see their face and they're not forced to speak. I think what the GC is referring to is the kind of thing Iran did to those Brit sailors last year.

Porterhouse,

I may have explained the Warner Wolf reference at some point. I doubt anyone who didn't live in New York in the 80's gets it (is he still on there?).

Carl,

I don't know if Warner is still on the air - I left the New York Metro area in '89. But I remember him well!
