Internal opposition

As I noted in an earlier post, Ehud Nero Olmert announced to the foreign press today that he still intends to carry out his convergence consolidation realignment surrender, expulsion and suicide plan in Judea and Samaria, despite the smashing success failure a mini-version of the plan has been in Gaza. But the country may finally have some luck here.

It seems that not everyone in Olmert's Kadima Achora party is married to a member of Machsom Watch, and some of those who have slightly more mainstream views are actually beginning to form opposition to Olmert's plan within his own party. Like Meir Shitreet, who was considered one of the more leftwing members of the Likud when he was in that party.

The Jerusalem Post is reporting that Housing and Construction Minister Meir Shitreet said reiterated comments he made last week while speaking to The Jerusalem Post, in which he said, "There is no point in giving West Bank land and receiving nothing in return. The Palestinians don't want peace. They will use the land to attack the Dan region."

"I don't believe in another unilateral withdrawal," Shitreet said Monday. "What is going on in Gaza reinforces the opposition to realignment.

"I suggest we be patient until we have someone on the other side who we can talk to, just as the Palestinians have waited two generations for Israel to be wiped off the map," he said.

Shitreet added that his stance was the same as that of former prime minister Ariel Sharon, who, according to Shitreet, was against another unilateral withdrawal.

If Shitreet is saying it, one would think that some of the less leftist ministers in Kadima Achora are at least thinking it.

I just hope that Olmert does not get to carry forward with his suicidally stupid plan. The ironic thing is, he could have gotten away with it, if it were not for the stupidity and savagery of the Palestinians in their suicide bombing, kidnapping, murder, firing rockets, and general mayhem.

That's why Golda said that the 'Palestinians' never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
