Ayatollah Ali Khameni rejects Ahmadinejad; UPDATE: Obama press secretary says Ahmadinejad the 'elected leader' of Iran

Ayatollah Ali Khameni may have endorsed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election, but he did not do so warmly. As you will see in this video, Ahmadinejad tried to kiss Khameni's cheek or hand, which are the accepted gestures in Iranian Islamic society, but Khameni ducks and Ahmadinejad only gets his robe.

Let's go to the videotape.

Is Khameni hedging his bets on Ahmadinejad? I'm not expert enough to say, but it sure looks like it.

UPDATE 11:12 PM

White House press secretary Gibbs recognizes Ahmadinejad as the 'elected leader' of Iran.

So the Obama administration is even more sure of Ahmadinejad's legitimacy than is Ali Khameni. What could go wrong?

The truth is the Supreme Leader and the President share the same fate. Khamenei is keeping all his options just in case the President falls short of expectations. In Iran, a public figure is always expendable.
