He deserves a lot more than three cheers, but he especially deserves applause for this one. Speaking to a Birthright group, Adelson said that Newt Gingrich, whom he also supports, is right: The 'Palestinians' are an invented people.
Addressing a Hanukkah celebration for hundreds of youths visiting Israel as part of the Taglit Birthright program on Sunday, Adelson said, “Read the history of those who call themselves Palestinians, and you will hear why [Newt] Gingrich said recently that the Palestinians are an invented people. There are a number of Palestinians who will recognize the truth of this statement.”
Adelson also appealed to the hundreds of Jewish youth in the audience to study history and be “goodwill ambassadors” for Israel.
“When you return to your countries of origin, speak in support of Israel – don’t let Muslim student organizations take over the campuses. Learn history, go back to the Ottoman Empire and the First World War, and know the issue under discussion, and when you return to our homes you will remember that you are goodwill ambassadors for Israel,” Adelson said.
It's about time that a pro-Israel statement to Birthright made more news than the anti-Israelpropagandizing.
You will recall that last week I showed you a video of a disgraceful demonstration called Occupy Birthright. Fresno Zionism's Vic Rosenthal has the scoop on the privileged characters (yes, of course they're little rich kids) who were behind that display.
So who were they? They were members of “Young, Jewish, and Proud” (YJP), the “youth wing” of the Jewish Voice for Peace organization, the only Jewish organization to make the ADL’s list of the top ten anti-Israel groups in the nation.
As I mentioned yesterday, the male speaker in the video is Max Blumenthal, left-wing ‘journalist’ and videographer who is known for baiting pleasant evangelical Protestants and drunken students. Blumenthal has been responsible for some vicious anti-Israel slanders, including an incredible 2010 article which asserted that the use of deadly force on the Mavi Marmara was planned and intended in advance, in order “to lift the morale of the Israeli public while intimidating Iran and the Arab world.”
The first female speaker was Kiera Feldman, who wrote a snarky piece in The Nation about her own Birthright trip, suggesting that the main idea was “promotion … of flings among participants, or between participants and [Israeli] soldiers” as a form of Zionist mind control. Birthright sponsors admitted to her that bringing together young Jewish people tends to encourage marriage between Jews, which they think is a good thing (Feldman apparently doesn’t).
...
Feldman and Blumenthal, of course, have highly privileged backgrounds. Kiera Feldman graduated from Ivy-League Brown University in 2008 (in 2010, the total cost of a year at Brown was $51,360. No wonder she smells and looks expensive!) And Max Blumenthal is the son of Senior Adviser to President Clinton Sidney Blumenthal.
Unfortunately, we've seen before the phenomenon of non-Halachic Jews passing themselves off as Jewish to attack Israel from the Left, haven't we? Anyone else think that might be some of what's in play here?
Jewish Federation's General Assembly gives itself over to anti-Israel and anti-Semitic agendas
Caroline Glick has a deeply disturbing indictment of the recently concluded Jewish Federation General Assembly in Denver, Colorado.
This year at Jewish Federations of North America'sannual General Assembly, they invited the newly minted anti-Israel activist Peter Beinhart to speak. They also showcased the Boston Globe's resident anti-Israel columnist James Carroll. These moves as well as much of the program of the 3-day conference which presented several panels discussing whether anti-Zionists should be embraced by the community are indicative of the advanced suicidal tendencies of the American Jewish community.
This is a community that has for generations seamlessly merged its definition of Judaism with leftist politics. And now that this generation of leftists has cast its lot with the anti-Semites, the young American Jews coming of age have embraced anti-Semitism to show their moral purity.
It may have once gone without saying, but apparently it is no longer obvious that this embrace of Jew hatred by young American Jews is a death embrace for the community.
The only way to deal with this is head on.
But who among the well-funded American Jewish leadership has the courage to tell these young people that they are deranged? Who has the courage to tell their children that they have embraced evil and ought to be ashamed of themselves?
Two observations: First, these people strike me as a bunch of morons who cannot think or speak for themselves and have to repeat the nonsense uttered by others. And second, if I were sitting in that audience, I would be awfully angry at these people for interrupting. Recall my story about Tony Kushner at my college graduation and how my good friend the Republican tried to trip the protesters on their way out.
So watch this and imagine what you would do if you were there. I hope Birthright is able to do a better job of screening so that Jewish communal money is not wasted bringing this kind of scum to Israel. Sadly, they don't understand that if the Occupy Wall Street people get their way, no one will care that they are self-hating Jews.
Let's go to the videotape.
By the way, the comments over there (at least the ones I saw) ought to give American Jews a lot of discomfort.
I am an Orthodox Jew - some would even call me 'ultra-Orthodox.' Born in Boston, I was a corporate and securities attorney in New York City for seven years before making aliya to Israel in 1991 (I don't look it but I really am that old :-). I have been happily married to the same woman for thirty-five years, and we have eight children (bli ayin hara) ranging in age from 13 to 33 years and nine grandchildren. Four of our children are married! Before I started blogging I was a heavy contributor on a number of email lists and ran an email list called the Matzav from 2000-2004.
