Israeli doctors save 15-year old Syrian girl's leg, give her prosthesis for other leg
A 15-year old Syrian girl was released from Ziv Hospital in Tzfat on Tuesday after Israeli doctors saved her left leg and gave her a prosthesis for her right leg, which had been amputated by Syrian field medics.
The 15-year-old girl was
brought to the hospital by the Israel Defense Forces with serious
shrapnel injuries to her left leg and stomach, after Syrian field medics
amputated her right leg.
Israeli doctors succeeded in saving her left
leg, and found a donor to cover the costs of getting a prosthetic leg
for her. She was released on Tuesday in good condition.
"I wish the Israeli people a happy new year
and I hope there will be peace and we will be able to meet again in a
more sane Middle East," the girl's mother said. The two will return to
their homes in the Daraa region.
As you might recall, Daraa was where the uprising against Bashar al-Assad started. How many Syrians would help an Israeli... don't go there.
There is a humanitarian aid convoy to Daraa, but of course the Turks have nothing to do with it
There was supposed to be a humanitarian aid convoy leaving for Daraa from the Jordanian border crossing (Daraa is the first town inside Syria) at 8:00 Monday morning. As of this writing, I have seen nothing about the convoy's progress (Hat Tip: Dvora W).
A convoy of humanitarian aid to Daraa, Syria will leave from the border with Jordan at 0800 local time on Monday 2nd May 2011. The residents there have been without electricity or communications since Monday 25 April, and are under bombardment from their own military forces, targeted by snipers and homes raided by police and state security.
Residents have remained defiant: Unable to leave their homes, they have chanted "God is Great!" to each other from their windows in the evenings, infuriating security forces and raising each other's spirits.
"Our houses are close to each other, so even though we can't go outside, we stand by the windows and chant," said a Daraa resident, speaking to the Associated Press by satellite phone. "Our neighbors can hear us and they respond."
Daraa has been without water, fuel or electricity since Monday, when the regime sent in troops backed by tanks and snipers to crush protests seeking an end to President Bashar Assad's authoritarian rule.
Tanks and armored personal vehicles have cut off neighborhoods, and snipers nesting on rooftops throughout the city have kept residents pinned in their homes. Other areas of the country also have come under military control, but Daraa has faced the most serious stranglehold.
Syrian forces ordered to quell Daraa uprising using 'any means necessary'
Syrian armed forces have been ordered to quell the uprising in the town of Daraa using 'any means necessary' (Hat Tip: Instapundit).
A Syrian military source says President Bashar Assad's security forces have been ordered to quell the uprising in Dara 'even if this means that the city is to be burned down.'
Sounds like Assad's father has come back from the grave to give the orders.
Well, this has all the makings of an international incident. Israel Radio reported at 1:00 pm that a Turkish citizen was shot in the head by Syrian troops while trying to cross the border from Syria into Jordan. Apparently, two Turks had tried to reach Daraa, the site of rioting against the Assad regime, could not do so, and headed back for the nearby border to cross back into Jordan. Syrian troops fired at them and one of them was hit in the head.
On Monday, Syria sent tanks into Daraa and closed its border with Jordan. According to Israel Radio reports, Syrian troops have been ordered to shoot anything that moves in the area.
There is lots of video of the protests against the Assad regime in Syria here. Here are two different angles of what is apparently an execution in the town of Dara'a.
According to Mohammad Al Abdallah, a Syrian exile based in Washington, this brief, blurry clip, which was posted online on Tuesday, shows “security forces executing a wounded protester in Dara’a last Friday.”
Let's go to the videotape.
This street-level video appears to have been filmed at roughly the same time and in the same place as the previous clip, and shows the body of a badly wounded or dead protester being dragged past the camera:
Dara'a. Demonstrations continue in the city and witnesses speak of more killings today. Appeals on Facebook for more medical supplies to the Midani Hospital and the al-Omari Mosque, turned into a hospital. The city is closed shut to any outsiders. People from the region are sending urgent messages that Assad's Security Forces are using a version of some tear gas and people are dropping to the ground like flies. THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY MUST RESPOND TO PROTECT SYRIANS FROM THE SAVAGERY OF ASSAD BECAUSE HE IS EMBARKING ON ANOTHER HAMA.
Damascus. Syrian officials are claiming that unknown ASSAILANTS, wearing stolen military outfits, are behind the killing in Dara'a. It said the government is investigating the matter urgently. They still think Syrians are stupid.
Damascus. According to Razan Zeitouneh, human rights lawyer, Assad's security forces have contained a large demonstration in the center of Damascus.
I would bet that the Assad regime is using mustard gas. Anyone want to bet that despite its going after Gadhafi this weekend, the 'international community' will not go after Assad? More on that soon.
