Iron Dome could get 'better'
Looking at the hundreds of interceptions of incoming rockets by Iron Dome batteries in the past few days over cities in the south and metropolitan Tel Aviv, [CEO Natan] Barak realizes that the system has saved many lives in both Israel and Gaza. "Gaza too should be pleased with the success of Iron Dome. Without it, the IDF would now be in the midst of a major ground operation and there would be many more Palestinian dead. We have not yet fully used the Iron Dome's capabilities, and these capabilities will be expanded and the percentage of interceptions will only go up," he concludes.Sorry, but I'd rather that it not get better, and I'd rather that we go into Gaza and resolve the issue.
It's great that Iron Dome stops incoming rockets. Unfortunately, what it also does is enable the political echelon to muddle through without reaching conclusions, leaving the residents of the south (and increasingly the rest of the country) relatively safe from missile hits but unable to go about their lives in a normal fashion.
And in the longer run, it enables the Obama administration (you didn't think they were financing it out of the goodness of their hearts, did you?) to use it as a lever to force Israel to give up territory to the 'Palestinians.' The Iron Dome has always been a project of the Left here, and not of the Right.
What could go wrong?

I'd like to see it get so much better that whatever Gaza shoots gets knocked back down onto the senders' territory. Boost phase, right after launch. Laser developers, get it done!
It should be combined with an automatic offensive missile system. Knock down a projectile and send one back.
Yeah, Sunlight...and all The Usual Idiots in the West would then call that an "Israeli war crime". You just know they would! Which bespeaks a mass shared mental illness of those critics.
No country on the face of the earth is expected by Western powers to put up with the savage, murderous crap that Israel is expected to put up with, day in, day out, year in, year out.
I'm a person blessed/cursed with a very vivid imagination and I'm just sitting here at my PC, in my safe, well-stocked American home, trying to put myself in the position of a family man in, say, Sderot. I'm imagining myself as that family man, a hard-working, honest, decent man trying to provide my beloved wife and children with a good home...and I see my wife and children exhibiting signs of PTSD, the kids startled and crying at any sudden loud noises, sometimes waking up with nightmares, my wife and I trying to plan and live our family's lives around never being more than 15 seconds from a bomb shelter. Words fail me, all I feel is the enormous frustration and anger that so many Israelis must feel. All I can say, and it seems so inadequate, is that you're all in my prayers.
Need to fix Trudy's comment:
"Knock down a projectile and send one hundred back."
But, no, folks. We shouldn't tolerate missiles being lobbed Israel's way.
Dresdenize Gaza.
The decision not to reoccupy Gaza is by now a cake baked to cement hardness. From that follows a disinclination to send in foot soldiers to mow the lawn. It is a given that air campaigns depend upon a diplomatic reset back to a status quo (after Hamas resources are attrited). Operation Cast Lead was an exception with its integrated ground and air game.
Lieberman's pledge to do the full Monte on Hamas some day some way after the next elections is a pious dream.
Agreed - the Iron Dome has short-term benefits, but is a long-term catastrophe. Apart from the incredible expense - and the fact that the number of rockets that still get through ensure that daily life is no less disrupted - putting your faith in a system like this is an acceptance of permanent cowering of an entire state to a bunch of terrorists.
