What you need to know about Iran if you're about to send a child to Israel
Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky is complaining that a potential war with Iran is delaying immigration plans to Israel. According to Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky, loose lips may have sunk ships in World War II, but loose lips in the 21st century delay flights.Sharansky told Israel Radio that dozens of potential immigrants to Israel are delaying their arrival over fears of a war with Iran.Yesterday, on the way out of shul, I was buttonholed by an anxious father who is sending a daughter to seminary in Israel in two weeks. He probably doesn't know that I blog, but he asked me what's going on with Iran. (I had a similar email last week from someone in the US who reads this blog).
The dozens of would-be immigrants have already finalized the details of their aliya, including where they will live upon arrival, Sharansky explained, but said many recently informed the Jewish Agency they are delaying their big move until the perceived lead-up to war passes.
The criticism appeared to be unique as most calls to end public discussions of war plans have generally centered on the wisdom of revealing internal Israeli security discussions to the international community, and even Iran.
Three-hundred and fifty new immigrants from North America arrived in Israel last week, nearly 130 of whom arrived to join the IDF.
Sharanksy's criticism of the public discussion of war, however, was not limited to the realm of immigration. The discussions "have crossed every red line," he told Israel Radio, claiming they are harming Israel's deterrence power.
I told him that he should send his daughter to Israel, but just in case, he should buy her a gas mask so that she is prepared. I really don't believe you need any more than that, particularly in Jerusalem. If Iran were God forbid nuclear already, this would be a whole different ballgame. But my own view is that Iran is the only party that will continue shooting beyond the first Israeli response. With fire coming in every direction, no IDF commander will have the time to worry about stopping civilian casualties in Lebanon or Gaza (or Syria if they get involved). Israel has already said that it will destroy Lebanon if Hezbullah attacks, and I find it hard to believe that it will do any less to Gaza.
So send your kids to Israel, send a gas mask so that you and they feel secure. If the attack happens, it will likely be in the three weeks between Succoth and the US elections, so if you feel insecure six weeks from now, you can always bring the kid home for Succoth and keep them home for a while.
Caveat: I am super cautious and during the intifada told parents overseas to keep their children off the buses in Israel. Many Israelis would be far less cautious than I am.

Well, and it doesn't matter where we are... to be a non-burden rather than sheep in what happens, we can do what we hate to do. It feels like we are survivalist preppers if we do anything that makes us self sufficient? Like:
- get a bunch of drinking water, store it under the bed (make sure it doesn't leak, and keep up with the expiration dates (can't just sit there forever and not have bacteria)
-get some LED lights and batteries. And maybe a radio with a crank handle on it? etc. I found out that if you're concerned about EMP, you can just get a mini aluminum trash can with a long edged lid at the home improvement store (about $6) to keep electronics in)
- some food? but watch the expiration dates
Just these tiny basics will help the effort, but it feels weird doing them. And, just out in the neighborhoods, Israel is actually safer than the U.S day to day... that's something else people should keep in mind.
Street criminals are becoming empowered by a magical chant as they commit their crimes. Rapists, muggers, and murderers are shouting ALLAHU AKBAR as they bloody their victims. Those that hear those magical words must reach for their weapons or flee for their lives.
Make no mistake about it though, the deaths of Americans in Israel, be they not Muslim would be met with deafening silence from the Obama administration. To be fair though, more than 50 (solely) American citizens died in the al Aqsa war and Clinton and Bush said absolutely nothing about that too.
