Steinitz: Iran could nuke the US in 2-3 years

Israel's cabinet ministers tend to know a little bit about everything. Yuval Steinitz, who is Israel's Finance Minister, is no exception. He has a PhD in Philosophy and was Chairman of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. I say that as an introduction: Don't treat his comments about Iran's potential nuclear weapons capabilities as coming from some sort of Ben Bernake lite.

Steinitz told CNBC on Wednesday morning that Iran could potentially have intercontinental ballistic missiles that could reach the East Coast of the United States within 2-3 years.

Let's go to the videotape.

I guess that 2-3 year timeline assumes that Obama is reelected. I would hope that if a Republican wins, Iran would at least be stopped from developing ICBM's.

Nobody has much of a need or a use for ICBM any longer. Besides, if shot at an advanced country, they would be shot down, as they fly for many minutes. Their only use might be for propaganda e.g. shipping a nuclear head on the moon nightside at 1st quarter, go on TV and invite the world's citizens to look outside their windows, and detonate. (Proposal rejected by Stalin a few decades ago.) Or of course they may be reconverted for scientific and commercial purposes, as many already were.

For bellic use, a much more realistic approach would be using short-range missiles from e.g. a ship. This technology is already available to Iranian authorities. It is just a matter of them deciding to do, which of course would get their country turned into a sheet of radioactive glass, but that may not be to them a deterrent.
