Overnight music video

The Talmud in Tractate Taanith 5b recounts that one of the rabbis took shelter underneath a tree, and when he was ready to leave, he said the following:

Ilan, ilan, ba'ma avareichecha? - Tree, tree, how shall I bless you?

She'yihyu peirothayech methukim? - That your fruits should be sweet?

Harei peirothayech methukim - Your fruits are already sweet.

She'yihe tzilach naeh? - That your shade should be pleasant?

Harei tzilach naeh - Your shade is already pleasant.

Ela Y'Hi Ratzon she'kol netioth she'not'im mimech yihyu k'mothech - But may it be God's will that all the saplings that are planted from you should be just like you.

This is a blessing that is often given to Jewish parents....

Tuesday night is Tu b'Shvat - the 15th day of the Jewish month of Shvat, the New Year for the trees.

Here's Yaakov Shwekey with Ilan Ilan.

Let's go to the videotape. There's more after the video.

A beautiful song, no?

Now, here's the same song, without putting the words in front of you, with a dance performance.

Let's go to the videotape.

Beautiful! And to show how Hebrew impaired I am, I've known several people named "Ilan" and I had no idea that the word for tree is ilan. I think in my golden years, I want to learn Hebrew and learn how to play the piano again.
