Michael Oren: Assad's ouster would be an opportunity for Israel
Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the United States, spoke to a breakfast meeting sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor in Washington on Tuesday. At the breakfast, Oren discussed the current goings on in Syria, and said that the ouster of Bashar al-Assad would be an 'opportunity' for Israel.Oren offered two examples of how Assad's downfall would be beneficial to Israel.I think that depends in part on who takes Assad's place.
“We think that would possibly weaken the alliance between Syria and Iran. It would possibly loosen the Syrian stranglehold of Lebanon,” he said. “It would be good for just about everybody in the region except for the Ba’athist regime,” which has held power in Syria since 1963.
By the way, I believe that the video on that page is from Oren's appearance last month at the same forum, at which he discussed 'Palestinian' unilateralism.
