Government snubs Europeans

Sorry about the light posting today - Mrs. Carl and I had to go to Tel Aviv.

Despite threats from the Europeans, the Ministerial Legislation Committee approved by an 11-5 margin two bills that would limit foreign government and UN contributions to NGO's to NIS 20,000 per year, and that would levy a 45% tax on foreign donations to NGO's in Israel.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyhau supported both bills. Also amongst the 11 in favor were MKs Gilad Erdan, Gidon Sa'ar, Limor Livnat, Moshe Cahlon, Daniel Hershkowitz, Yitzhak Aharonovitz, Yossi Peled, Stas Misezhnikov. Yuval Steinitz, and Sofa Landver.

MKs Benny Begin, Dan Meridor, Orit Noked, Michael Eitan, and Shalom Shimhon opposed the bills, and Meshulam Nahari and Yaakov Margi abstained.
The only surprise there is Benny Begin. Hmmm.

Europe would never tolerate Israel financing anti-European NGOs and allowing them to influence its policies. Israeli NGOs that receive the bulk of their funding from sources hostile to Israel must not be allowed to undermine the country. If they cannot get most of their funds within Israel, there is no reason for them to exist. Let's hope this much needed and overdue legislation finally makes it into law - and Europe's financial stranglehold on Israel's windpipe is removed for good.

What could go wrong indeed
