I am an Orthodox Jew - some would even call me 'ultra-Orthodox.' Born in Boston, I was a corporate and securities attorney in New York City for seven years before making aliya to Israel in 1991 (I don't look it but I really am that old :-). I have been happily married to the same woman for thirty-five years, and we have eight children (bli ayin hara) ranging in age from 13 to 33 years and nine grandchildren. I fear that the majority of Jews in the US will not wake up until they are rounded up and put on cattle cars. Nothing has awoken them yet.
Findalis, it is because they have been stewed in the Frankfurt group new left marxist philosophy. They have learned to convert Torah study readings into a completely pretzeled meaning that reflects marxism... I've seen it done... somehow obliterating that the two views are dissonant. And when push comes to shove, it is the new left marxists that they are.
It's kind of like hearing some Israeli and other Jews say that people involved with liberal streams are not "real" Jews (I know, hallacha), while the rest of the world treats them as Jews no different than any other Jews. It's really the Twilight Zone from all sides. I mostly wonder whether those (including in Israel) who consider themselves well-founded will swallow their pride (or look for the 80% that Reagan talked about) and lead by creating a do-able path for the stranded.
