Saudis warn France of al-Qaeda attack

Saudi Arabia has warned France of the imminent threat of a strike by al-Qaeda somewhere in France (Hat Tip: Memeorandum).
"I can tell you - and it's not information that's been made public yet - that even a few hours, a few days ago, [we received] a new message, from the Saudi [intelligence] services, indicating to us that Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula was certainly active, or expecting to be active," Mr Hortefeux said in a joint radio and television interview.

He said the threat concerned "the European continent and France in particular".

Mr Hortefeux gave little detail about the information the Saudis had provided, but said the threat was real.

It appears to have been released by the government as a warning to the French public that they must remain vigilant, says the BBC's Christian Fraser in Paris.

The authorities have been criticised for scaremongering, our correspondent says. The official threat level in France remains one below the highest level of scarlet.
We're rapidly approaching the point where the rest of the West has to live the way Israel has lived for the last 40 years or so: Handbag checks and body searches every time you enter a closed public area, constant reporting of suspicious looking characters, constant vigilance by the public, and a lot less of a feeling of freedom. That will continue at least until we are willing to militarily confront and totally defeat the Islamist menace. If Israel has not had the will to do that over the last 40 years, when we have clearly suffered most from it, what makes anyone think that another country will?
