Dagan gone?

Meir Dagan, the man without whom Iran would already have nuclear weapons, may be out as the head of the Mossad according to a report on Channel 2 on Friday night.
According to the report, Dagan, who has been head of the Mossad for the last eight years, requested to work another year in the role, but was refused.

...

The decision not to renew Dagan's appointment is likely related to the fallout from the recent attempt to assassinate Hamas commander Mahmoud al Mabhouh in Dubai.
On Saturday night, the Prime Minister's office denied that Dagan has asked for an extension beyond the end of 2010 (although I find it incredible that he would not ask for an extension and that such an extension would not be granted). Here are some possible candidates to replace Meir Dagan.
One possible candidate is T., who served in the past as Dagan’s deputy, left the Mossad and recently returned.

Other candidates are believed to be the head of Tzomet, the Mossad branch that directs its worldwide network of agents, as well as the head of the Tevel Branch, which is responsible for the Mossad’s ties with foreign intelligence agencies.

Predictions within the defense establishment are that Netanyahu will decide on a successor to Dagan after Defense Minister Ehud Barak chooses a successor to IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, who is set to finish his fouryear term in February. This is because one of the generals vying for the top IDF post could be given the Mossad directorship as a consolation prize.

Another candidate is Yuval Diskin, the current head of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), who is also scheduled to complete his term by the end of the year, and head of Military Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin.
I'm very much opposed to changing horses in the middle of a race unless you're losing miserably. From everything that's been said about Dagan, especially abroad, he's done a masterful job of interfering with Iran's nuclear weapons quest, and I find it incredible that he is apparently going to be replaced. I could care less about all the Europeans who are angry over their passports being used for the Mabhouh assassination (does this constitute an admission that the Mossad did it?). This is shooting yourself in the foot about as badly as could possibly be.

It's Netanyahu and Barak that really have to go.

If you do a good job, stay on. If Israel's politicians bungle what was supposed to be a simple military operation, its not the people who carry out their orders who should pay the price.

There's no real accountability in Israel for failure.
