Abu Mazen says no to interim state, urges Obama to impose solution

As expected, 'moderate' 'Palestinian' President Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen has turned down Prime Minister Netanyahu's proposal for an 'interim' 'Palestinian state.'
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday said he strongly opposes the idea of a Palestinian state with temporary borders or a “one-state solution,” saying the Palestinians remained committed to the two-state solution.

Abbas’s remarks came a day after he met in his Ramallah office with US special envoy George Mitchell, who briefed him on his talks with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem earlier in the day.

Mitchell arrived in Israel on Thursday amid high hopes of a breakthrough that would launch proximity talks between Israel and the PA.

Outside of meetings on Friday with Netanyahu and Abbas, Mitchell spoke with Defense Minister Ehud Barak and President Shimon Peres. He is scheduled to hold a second meeting with Netanyahu on Sunday before he flies back to Washington.

But already on Friday night, US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said, “Are we expecting a breakthrough through this visit? Probably not.”

Chief PA Negotiator Saeb Erekat said after the Abbas-Mitchell meeting that it was premature to talk about the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in the coming days. He said that Mitchell would pursue his efforts to reach an agreement that would allow the two sides to return to the negotiating table.

A PA official in Ramallah said that Mitchell did not bring anything new.
The 'Palestinians' are continuing to insist that they will not resume negotiations unless and until there is a building freeze in 'east' Jerusalem. I guess they can't let President Obama be more 'Palestinian' than they are.

Abu Mazen has also asked President Obama to impose a solution.
"Mr. President [Barack Obama] and members of the American administration, since you believe in this [an independent Palestinian state], it is your duty to take steps toward a solution and to impose this solution," Abbas said in a speech.

...

"We've asked them [the Obama administration] more than once: 'Impose a solution,'" Abbas said.
Here's more of Abu Mazen's speech:
"Since you, Mr. President and you, the members of the American administration, believe in this, it is your duty to call for the steps in order to reach the solution and impose the solution -- impose it," Abbas said in a speech to leaders of his Fatah movement.

"But don't tell me it's a vital national strategic American interest ... and then not do anything," he added....
Curiously, Haaretz claims the 'interim state' would be on 40-50% of Judea and Samaria, while JPost reports it would be on 50-80%. JPost also cites an Israeli diplomatic source that claims that Netanyahu never offered an 'interim state.'

There isn't going to be a 'Palestinian state' anytime soon. Even if Obama tried to impose a solution (which I don't believe would succeed), it is most unlikely that it would include a 'right of return' for the 'refugees.' Would the 'Palestinians' accept that?

What could go wrong?

I'm amazed that the Israeli government doesn't insist on direct talks only. Why give in to them from the start? It only encourages them.

As I said, the offer has revealed they don't want a state even on extremely favorable terms. Recall Ehud Olmert went a lot further than Netanyahu will ever go and he offered Abu Bluff 97% of Yesha and half of Jerusalem. He never got an answer. What the Palestinians really want is to destroy Israel and they will never accept any two-state solution that has its price the final termination of the conflict between them and Israel. So Abu Bluff's response was entirely predictable. A Palestinian state for various reasons, isn't going to happen any time soon.

"JPost also cites an Israeli diplomatic source that claims that Netanyahu never offered an 'interim state.'"

This is how the press works to create its own news and controversies that are devoid of sources or substance:

1. Ha'aretz reports that Netanyahu may be amenable to the idea of an 'interim state.' They are trying to read his mind.

2. Other news outlets pick it up as "Ha'aretz reports..." although Ha'aretz provided no sources at all for this information. They were trying to read Netanyahu's mind and turned it into a news story.

3. Other news outlets try to read Netanyahu's mind a bit more by deciding how much of Judea and Samaria Netanyahu may be amenable to offering.

4. Abu Mazen reads these news stories and rejects the idea of an interim state.

5. The news reports say: "Mahmoud Abbas rejects Netanyahu's OFFER of an interim state."

6. JPost reports that an Israeli diplomat says that Netanyahu didn't offer Abu Mazen an interim state.

The news outlets get several rounds of stories out of this:

1. What Netanyahu may be thinking.
2. What Netanyahu's thoughts might mean in more detail.
3. Abu Mazen's rejection of the possible thoughts of Netanyahu.
4. Netanyahu's possible thoughts are converted from mind reading to an actual offer that has now been rejected by Abu Mazen.
5. Israeli diplomat is cited to say there was no offer.

Ha'aretz might as well put up those pictures of a 90s-something JFK in a wheelchair next to Elvis along with The Alien who chooses the winner of the next American Presidential election. If Ha'aretz in particular is going to be a Tabloid, they might as well go all the way.

Daniel Greenfield AKA Sultan Knish, has listed five lies the Obami have spread about Israel. I won't belabor all of them here but but the second lie deserves particular attention:

"2. Obama Wants Netanyahu's Right Wing Coalition to be More Centrist"

"More centrist. Really? Netanyahu's current coalition includes the Left wing Labor party, an immigrant's rights party and the party of Sefardi Jews. It even has an Arab Muslim Deputy Minister."

"So what is Obama's idea of a centrist Israeli government? One that jettisons Shas, the party of Jewish refugees from Muslim countries, and Yisrael Beitenu, the party of Jewish refugees from the USSR-- in favor of Kadima, an illegitimately created party headed by Tzipi Livni, a former member of Netanyahu's own Likud party. How is a coalition with Kadima more "centrist" than a coalition with the Labor party and parties that represent Israel's different minorities? The answer is it isn't. The only thing "centrist" about Kadima, is that Tzipi Livni airheadedly endorses every Obama proposal, which hasn't exactly made her popular in the country. But it has made her popular with Obama, who wants to force her into a coalition with Netanyahu."

"If you believe the Washington talking heads, Livni will make Netanyahu's coalition more centrist than former Labor Prime Minister Ehud Barack. This despite the fact that Kadima officials have repeatedly stated they will not enter any coalition headed by Netanyahu."

"Let me emphasize this again. Obama's people are trying to force Netanyahu to drop two parties, one of Jewish refugees from Muslim countries and another of Jewish refugees from Communist countries-- (it's not too hard to figure out why Obama would dislike both) in order to form a more "centrist" coalition with a former member of his own party."

In other words, Israel already has the most broad-based government in Israel's history but its not broad-based enough for Obama. What Obama is really looking for is a narrow left-wing government the Likud would anchor down with Kadima, Labor and Meretz and with outside support from the Arab parties. Which shows how little the Obami understand Israeli politics.

Its a good read and there are the other Obama lies analyzed here. Read it all
