Livni's kiss of death
If anyone needed a reminder whose party Tzipi Livni now heads, you got it today. Prime Minister Olmert issued Sunday his endorsement of Kadima following speculations regarding his vote in Israel's upcoming general elections.If anyone who reads this blog and has the right to vote in Israel is still thinking of voting for Kadima, please consider that you're voting for more of Ehud K. Olmert.
The uncertainty began to scatter early last week when he told fellow ministers during a government meeting: "This time I will be voting for the party headed by a woman."
The statement was made following speculations that Olmert would not be voting for his own party due to the rift with his Kadima successor and prime ministerial candidate Tzipi Livni.
Various political officials had stated that Olmert would rather vote for Likud, or would even cast a blank ballot in light of his fractured relations with Kadima's chairwoman.
A few weeks ago Olmert was confronted by Kadima members Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik, MK Haim Ramon and MK Tzachi Hanegbi, who pleaded with Olmert to support his party. Olmert responded affirmatively.
It's been a while since I've run that picture. Heh.

The Labor party slammed Olmert's eleventh-hour endorsement, saying that it was "the latest and most bizarre announcement made in this election campaign."Heh.
"The fact that it took Olmert, a member of the same party as Livni - who was his deputy - the three years of his term and a lengthy campaign in order to announce after many deliberations that he is endorsing her indicates more than anything else the contempt he harbors towards her."

I think Ehud Olmert's timing is apt as usual - he's managed to make people discover why they don't like him and why his last minute endorsement of Tzipi Livni is less than it seems.
Does any one really want to vote for another Olmert term? That is what Israelis would get under his Kadima successor. More of the same ill-starred last 2 1/2 years. I wonder if Jews are fed up with being Kadima's guinea pigs. We'll find out the answer on Tuesday.

I have to agree the Labor Party got it right for once. If Tzipi is such great Prime Ministerial material, Olmert would have endorsed her from the outset.
This late hour "endorsement" shows how little he really thinks of her and is his final parting shot across the bow as PM. No one in Israel takes that at all very seriously and neither I suspect, does Olmert.
