Breaking: Syrians fire on Israel in Golan!

Israel Radio has just reported that someone on the Syrian side of the border fired upon an Israeli road work crew in the southern Golan Heights. There were no injuries but there was damage to a vehicle that the crew was using.

More details when I have them.

UPDATE 5:08 PM

The shooting took place around 3:00 this afternoon in the area of Alonei HaBashan. A complaint has been filed with the UN peacekeeping forces. For the time being, no changes to people's ordinary life in the Golan.

UPDATE 5:09 PM

The crew was doing maintenance work on the border fence. No one thinks the shooter was an official Syrian; more likely a 'Palestinian' or an individual who acted alone and took it upon himself to shoot at Israelis. Nevertheless, the border is on high alert.

UPDATE 5:11 PM

For the record, Syria is our 'quiet' border.

UPDATE 6:00 PM

Israel Radio is now reporting that it was an IDF engineering corps company that was doing work on the border fence.

The IDF believes that the Syrians have no connection to the shooting.

There are Hezbollah/Hamas provocateurs who would like to draw Israel into a wider war. We'll continue to see incidents of this sort up North.
