2 IDF soldiers killed, six or seven wounded in Lebanon
The Jerusalem Post is reporting two of the IDF soldiers out of the eight or nine who have been reported all afternoon as being wounded in the fighting on the Lebanese border today were actually killed. To be honest, I heard this several hours ago. It is common IDF practice not to make the information public that soldiers have been killed R"L without telling the family first. Until that time, they report the soldiers as wounded. The following is from the Jerusalem Post's summary:
Fighting took place near the Lebanese village of Maroun a-Ras, adjacent to Avivim but on the Lebanese side of the border.HaAretz adds:
Soldiers operating in Maroun a-Ras reported finding rocket launchers, explosives and other munitions and weapons in a mosque there. [Guess what: that violates the Geneva Convention! CiJ]
According to the IDF, 10 Hizbullah cells were hit by the IDF throughout the day, as well as three Hizbullah command centers. The army estimated that between 30 and 40 Hizbullah terrorists were killed.
However, a high-ranking IDF officer said the difficulties troops encountered in Thursday's fighting could prompt a larger-scale ground offensive into southern Lebanon.
Hizbullah also launched between eight and 10 rockets at Israel from southern Lebanon after a period of seven hours in which no rockets had been fired.
Major-General Benny Gantz, who serves as the head of the Ground Forces Command, said on Thursday that ground fighting in limited areas in Lebanon would continue despite the IDF's causalties.Maybe someone should call the UN. Or the Swiss government.
Hezbollah bunkers are well-hidden and discernible only from a close distance, said Gantz. "The operation is challenging, difficult and complex. Unfortunately, there is the price of casualties, but the other side, unlike us, doesn't report their casualties," he added.
Officials have confirmed that a small number of Israeli troops are carrying out pinpoint operations in south Lebanon, aimed at uncovering tunnels dug by Hezbollah militants. According to the army, Hezbollah fighters have taken refuge inside these tunnels - often dug under homes in villages - along with their rockets, and that they occasionally emerge to fire one into Israel. [Guess what folks - that violates the Geneva Convention! CiJ]

oren - good for you! You're not "wasting your life" and don't let anyone tell you that you are. My son just returned from Israel two days ago. He was with a group of teens from Detroit Michigan. They were supposed to be there until August 1, but returned early, due to the current circumstances. He's going into 11th grade, but he's determined to go back to Israel next year. I don't know if he's going to make the commitment you're making, but if he wants to, I will support him.
Oren,
If you make aliya and become a fighter pilot, I guarantee you that the army will be happy to send you to college once your conscript days are over.
