Zero Hour

Sometime in the next hour or so, 'Palestinian President' Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen is expected to issue a 'Presidential decree calling for a referendum in forty days or so on the 'Prisoners' Document' that was drafted by Marwan the Moron and his cohorts, who are held in Israeli jails. Hamas, which polls indicate will lose the referendum, has declared the referendum 'illegal' and is now saying that they will boycott it. 'Legal experts' say that the referendum would not be binding.

Abu Mazen has formed a special committee of legal experts to prepare for the referendum, a senior PA official told The Jerusalem Post. Abu Mazen also established another committee, that has been charged with formulating a number of questions that voters would be required to answer in the referendum. One of the questions addresses public satisfaction with the performance of the Hamas government. Of course, that question is irrelevant to the question of whether or not the 'Prisoners' Document' should move ahead, and is an attempt by Abu Mazen to bring about the downfall of the Hamas government. In that respect, I believe that he has bitten off more than he can chew.

Abu Mazen has also asked the European Union to foot the bill for the logistics of the 'referendum.' Who knows: maybe they'll even bring in Dhimmi Carter to supervise. Then again, given that Carter is a known Hamas sympathizer, maybe they won't.

My predictions:

1. The 'referendum' will take place.
2. It will be boycotted by supporters of all factions other than Fatah, allowing all parties to claim 'victory.'
3. The referendum's results will change nothing.
4. Ultimately, 'Palestine' will split into Gaza being governed by Hamas, and the Arabs of Judea and Samaria (hopefully without Olmert's convergence consolidation realignment surrender and expulsion plan being implemented) being governed by Abu Mazen and Fatah.
