Former CIA officer claims Israel will attack Iran in September

Former CIA officer Robert Baer told Los Angeles radio station KPFK on Friday that Israel will attack Iran in September before the United Nations vote on establishing a 'Palestinian state.'
Baer told the KPFK Los Angeles show Background Briefing that previous comments made by Dagan that an Israeli attack on Iran could lead to a regional war, "tell us with near certainty that Netanyahu is planning an attack, and in as much as I can guess when it's going to be, it's probably going to be in September before a vote on the Palestinian state."

Baer added that Netanyahu is "also hoping to draw the United States into the conflict, and in fact there's a warning order inside the Pentagon to prepare for conflict with Iran."

The retired senior CIA officer predicted a scenario in which Israel would attack the Natanz nuclear facility as well as "a couple of others to degrade their capabilities."

"The Iranians will strike back were they can and that will be in Basra and in Baghdad," where the US has a diminished troop presence, Baer said, adding "we've started to look at Iran's targets in Iraq and across the border."

Baer, however, diffused predictions of regional war, saying, "What we're facing here is an escalation, not a planned all-out war."
I don't buy this. For starters, if we attacked Iran they would hit back at a lot more than Basra and Baghdad... unless they can't. For seconds, there is little hope of drawing the US in as long as Obama is President. He won't do it without UN approval. And for thirds, as much as Meir Dagan was a fool to shoot off his mouth, I don't think he would have said anything if there were actual plans to do it in September. Dagan may be a self-centered fool but he's not a traitor.

This story is entirely bogus. It is not for nothing that it is being aired on progressive, Marxist Pacifica. It has circulated under the meme that Bibi is going to bomb Iran to distract from UN recognition of Palestine in September-- one of many anti-neocon conspiracies about the Zionists inflaming the Middle East and dragging the US into a war with Islam--though this particular ex-CIA guy at this particular time may just be leaping to concluions and jumping onto a speculative bandwagon--but that is sure the heck why Pacifica is disseminating it.

Yes, Dagan is trying to head off some future action against Iran but this is possible future action, not imminent. He himself said: "At the moment no decision has been made to attack Iran, and I am not familiar with any decision to attack in 2011 or 2012."

No decision to attack in 2011 or 2012, let alone September. Left-wing Israeli journalists jumped on the September-is-the-attack meme after Dagan's don't-attack-Iran warnings even though Dagan himself contradicted that prediction and the New York Times recirculated their speculations. Anti-Zionists and conspiracy minded enthusiasts tilting against the windmills of ZOG added their hot air.

Carl has posted Caroline Glick's take on this, that Dagan refused to even present plans for a Tehran strike to Bibi and Bibi and Barak decided to wait him out.
