Apology to Professor Amiram Goldblum

In July 2008 I published in my blog site (IsraelMatzav) slandering information against Prof. Amiram Goldblum, wrongly attributing to him activity to bring back a convicted terrorist to continue his PhD studies at Hebrew University. The source for this false information was the journalist Amit Segal of Channel 2, after which Mr. Segal and Channel 2 were charged for slander by Prof. Goldblum and were forced to apologize by the court. I posted the information in English and added further wrong and harming information to Prof. Goldblum, who demands that I publicly apologize for the erroneous information.

I hereby apologize for harming Prof. Goldblum while it is clear to me now that all the details that I published about his actions and about him are wrong. I can only defend myself in being misled by Amit Segal and Channel 2 and in that since then I have not followed the matter and therefore missed the dramatic apology by Channel 2 to Prof. Goldblum in 2009. I deleted the original posting as part of my apology.

I am aware now that the Isracampus site still presents my blog claiming that I posted it, which I never did. Therefore, I demand that Prof. Plaut who runs that site should take off my posting immediately.

Israel is sorry - An apology to Turkey

If we're going to apologize to Turkey (which might eventually happen), this is what we ought to say:
We are sorry that lives were lost because militants on board attacked the Israeli soldiers whom they knew would board and whom they meticulously planned to attack.

We are sorry that soldiers were forced to defend their comrades who were being attacked by supposed peace activists and that some people died.

We are sorry that militants bent on violence were allowed by the Turkish government to board ships which the Turkish government knew aimed to violate Israel’s legal blockade of Gaza, endangering the lives of the hundreds of innocents on board the vessels as well as the soldiers who boarded the vessels legally and expected to meet little resistance from peace activists.

We are sorry that the Turkish government in an act of brinkmanship based in machismo has decided to jeopardize the future security and prosperity of the Turkish people, whose concerns are not well represented by this government, by refusing to admit any fault on the part of the participants in the flotilla, nor of the Turkish government for allowing it to sail, nor of the Turkish government from supporting aggressive action against its long-time ally Israel.

We are sorry that the honorable and freedom loving Turkish people are being manipulated into believing that Israelis–who have long worked in cooperation with Turks in defense of freedom and would love to do so going forward–as opposed to radical Islamists who seek to take their freedom away are the enemies of the Turkish people.

Haaretz bows to Turkey

Haaretz is calling for Israel to apologize to Turkey for the flotilla incident.
Turkey does not have clean hands when it criticizes Israel over its policy. The character of Turkey's war against Kurdish militants is not different from Israel's war. Also, it is moving closer to Iran, and its close ties with Syria are suspicious not only to Israel. But Turkey and Israel have known how to have successful, close relations, even at times of political disagreement.

Now too, just as it seems the two countries are on the verge of breaking links, we have to overcome the obsession of prestige and make every effort to revive the ties from the ruins. After all, in Israel, too, the operation against the flotilla is not considered to have been a complete success. Moreover, the decision to stop the flotilla brought about the opposite result. Israel, under international pressure, had to ease the siege on Gaza.

It will not be disastrous if Israel expresses sorrow for the deaths of Turkish civilians, even if it does not offer an official apology and if it agrees to offer symbolic compensation to the families of the dead. The damage to the country that is being caused by clinging to matters of prestige is much more serious.
Reader Joshua I points out that this isn't about prestige.
The Haaretz editorialist thinks that it is all a matter of a sorry and a compensation! How naive and how ignorant of the Turkish mentality, he can be!!!

The Turkish government orchestrated the entire Gaza campaign to find a pre-text for breaking with Israel and the Haaretz editorialist is advising further dhimmitude!

The Turks do not want to have good relations with Israel; they believe they do not need Israel and its lobby in the US; they think that afterall the Lobby is not anymore of great use for the new Turkey they have created.

If Israel offers apology and compensation, it will be humiliated; Turkey will become the first country to publicly humiliate Israel! If Turkey defends its dignity, so does Israel. if Turkey has a justification, so does Israel.
Indeed. Recall Erdogan storming out of Davos nearly two years ago (pictured above), which Haaretz refers to as a 'watershed' without acknowledging that it was unprovoked. And the anti-Semitic movies on Turkish television indicate that the dispute between Israel and Turkey is about much more than honor or prestige.

No, Israel should not humiliate itself by apologizing to the Turks. It would only whet their appetite for more.
