Hany Baransi has been serving authentic hummus and falafel in his central Ohio eatery for 27 years, proudly giving diners a taste of his Israeli Christian Arab heritage between bites of rich Mediterranean fare.
A sign bearing an Arabic greeting—“Ahlan Wa Sahalan”— hangs prominently near the glass doors of his Nazareth Restaurant & Deli in Columbus, through which passersby can also spot an Israeli flag. Baransi says he has always been outspoken about his Israeli identity, and so when his restaurant was attacked on Thursday evening by a machete-wielding man, he believed it was no coincidence.No, it was no coincidence. Nor was the attacker's name: Mohamed.
The assailant, identified by police as 30-year-old Mohamed Barry, “came in and asked where I was from,” Baransi told The Tower. While Baransi was at home nursing a headache at the time, one of his employees– a young waitress– told Barry that the owner is from Israel. The man left after he determined that Baransi wasn’t at the restaurant, only to return around 30 minutes later with a machete and start hacking people.
“He came to each table and just started hitting them,” Karen Bass, who was in the restaurant at the time, told WBNS. “There were tables and chairs overturned, there was a man on the floor bleeding, there was blood on the floor.”Fortunately, no one was killed and Barry was caught by police after he tried to hack them too.
“Is it a random attack? Yes, but it wasn’t a random attack like you’re walking in the street and there are 10 shops and you pick one,” he said. “It was a random attack [insofar] that I was one of the Israelis [picked] between all of the Israelis that are around here. It was a terrorist attack.”
“I am a very outspoken Israeli, and I have an Israeli flag in my restaurant,” added Baransi, who moved to the United States from Haifa in 1983 and said he tries to visit Israel as often as he can. “When people [from the Arab community] ask me where I am from, I tell them I am Israeli, I am an Israeli Christian Arab, it’s not like I am Palestinian, and then they start arguing and fighting with me.”

“You know, we are Israelis, used to this in our lives, people attacking us and wanting to kill us,” he observed. “But Americans — I have young ladies, 19, 20-years-old, they probably never heard people yelling and screaming. It was a huge experience for them. And some of them are very devastated. All of us communicate on a daily basis, and some of us, a couple of people, are still having a really hard time.”
He said that he is only willing to reopen his restaurant once his staff assures him that they are ready. “Even though I am hurting financially badly, if this time is needed for the well-being of my employees, I am okay with that,” he stressed. “God will provide for us.”First they come for the Saturday people and then they come for the Sunday people? Bet on it.

Milhem was found in his hideout and was discovered after the Shin Bet received information on his location on Friday, following an intensive Shin Bet - Israel Police investigation that included many undercover and overt operations to track him down.
The shooter tried to escape when he noticed security in the area, and opened fire at security forces using the Spectre M4 Falcon sub-machine gun in his possession, which he also used to murder his victims in Tel Aviv the previous week, the Shin Bet stated.That would be the same family whose head called for his son's arrest. The father was arrested anyway four days ago.
The family has erected a mourner's tent in his memory.
The PA Ministry of Health initially added Milhem, who is an Israeli citizen, to its list of “martyrs” who were killed by Israelis during the current wave of terrorism, which began in early October.In other words, the 'Palestinian Authority' still loves him anyway.
However, the ministry on Friday night removed Milhem’s name from the list. The ministry explained that it documents the names of Palestinian “martyrs” only in areas that fall under its jurisdiction, namely the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem.
However, the ministry did not offer any explanation as to why another Israeli Arab, Muhanad al-Okabi, is included in its list of “martyrs.” Al-Okabi, who carried out the October 18 terror attack at the Beersheba Central Bus Station, appears as number 31 on the PA ministry’s list of “martyrs.”
The ministry defended the decision to remove Milhem’s name from its “list of martyrs” by arguing that this does not mean that he is not entitled to be characterized as a “martyr.”
A statement issued by the PA ministry praised Milhem as “one of the most precious martyrs whose name has been inscribed with his pure blood that watered our the soil of our free land.”
The ministry dismissed criticism by many Palestinians for excluding Milhem from the list, saying he is no difference between him and any other Palestinian “martyr.”
“We are proud of our Palestinian people in the 1948 lands,” the PA ministry said, referring to Israel’s Arab citizens. “We are proud of their sacrifices and achievements. No one can deny their belonging to their homeland, Palestine.”

Hackers dumped online personal details of more than a million users of infidelity website AshleyMadison.com – including that of an Israeli Knesset member, according to reports.
The MK told Israeli media that he intends to file a police complaint over identity theft.
After threatening to release salacious details on as many as 37 million customers of the website, which uses the slogan "Life is short. Have an affair," hackers claimed to publish a huge cache of email addresses and credit card data stolen in July.
Reuters was not immediately able to confirm the authenticity of the posting. Avid Life Media, which owns Ashley Madison and Established Men, widely described as a "sugar daddy site," did not verify the data was real, but said it was aware of the claim.

The official Knesset e-mail address of Joint List MK Taleb Abu Arar, a bigamist, was found to have registered for Ashley Madison, a dating website for people who want to cheat on their spouses, when hackers released about 36 million members’ e-mail addresses.The first wife didn't exactly agree to the second one. According to the hack, Abu Arar not only registered for the infidelity site, he confirmed his e-mail address. That extra step is not necessary in order to join Ashley Madison, but the hack indicates that 24 million of the e-mail addresses released were confirmed.
Abu Arar denied having any connection to the website and said he plans to file a complaint to the police.
“Someone signed up with my e-mail address in order to sully my good name,” he said, calling for Ashley Madison to reveal the source of the registration.
Knesset e-mail addresses can be accessed by MKs and their aides on the Knesset’s secure computers, or via an encrypted connection from computers outside the Knesset, and with a code on the MKs’ and aides’ phones.
Unlike the average hacked Ashley Madison user, Abu Arar will have to explain his presence on the infidelity site to not one wife, but two. The second wife is by a common-law marriage, in order not to break the law against bigamy. Abu Arar, who is Beduin, has a combined 10 children from both of them.

Joint (Arab) List head Ayman Odeh called Netanyahu's statement unacceptable and said a sincere apology should come in the form of passing laws intended to make state funding allocations in Israel more equal. He noted that after the meeting with the Arab leaders, Netanyahu met with Bayit Yehudi leader Naftali Bennett and spoke to him about advancing nationalist legislation.Netanyahu needs to be consistent like Ayatollah Ali Khameni, who consistently says that Israel must be destroyed. Oh... wait.... They don't believe Khameni either.
"This is just another zigzag by a man known for his zigzags," Odeh said. "He should return the mandates he received for his incitement. We are waiting for a real apology, which means real equality."

Thousands of Palestinians rallied in the occupied West Bank on Saturday to protest against the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad in French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.
Simultaneous demonstrations were held in the cities of Ramallah and Hebron less than three weeks after Islamist gunmen shot dead 12 people in the Paris office of Charlie Hebdo, which has repeatedly featured cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.

"France is the mother of terrorism. America is the mother of terrorism," the protesters chanted. They carried black-and-white banners which read "There is only one God and Mohammad is his messenger."
The protests were called by the Islamist Tahrir Party, which advocates the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate in Muslim countries.
"We have taken to the streets in order to demand Muslim armies act the way France and the West deserve in response to the repeated offences against the Prophet, peace be upon him," said Baher Saleh, a member of the party.
It will be interesting to see whether the Arabs will try to build on their 'success' to bar the sale of Charlie Hebdo altogether.
Following the threats and warnings, the book seller backtracked on its decision to hold the launch event at its flagship store. "Steimatzky decisively supports in freedom of expression. The company has sold the magazine for years and will continue to do so. However, the firm has decided the sale of the specific issue will not occur at a special event in our store, but be held online starting Monday at 5 pm."
In a letter to the prime minister, [MK Masoud] Ganaim said, "Steimatzky intends to distribute images which hurt the Prophet Mohammed. This is a very serious, dangerous, and stupid step. This is not freedom of expression but a hard hit on the holiest of holies to Muslims, which will bring about unrest and anger among the Arabs and Muslims in the country… and no one can predict the results."
The Arab legislator urged the rightwing leader to stop the distribution of offending magazine. "I hereby appeal to your sense of honor; please personally intervene to prevent Steimatzky from distribution the magazine and the damaging images of the Prophet Mohammed, lest the Israeli government and Steimatzky be responsible for every consequence."

But even more striking was that Israel’s population authority left Muhammad off the annual Top 10 list of baby names it issued last week before Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. Haaretz, the left-leaning Israeli daily that first reported the omission, called this in an editorial “another form of racism, which in Israel has become institutionalized and self-evident.”
Sabine Haddad, a spokeswoman for the agency that published the list, described the missing Muhammads as something between a mistake and a misunderstanding. The list, she said, was simply a response to requests “for Hebrew names” in conjunction with the start of “the Hebrew New Year.” It would have been better, she acknowledged, to put an asterisk noting that what she called “obviously Arabic names” were left off. “There was no intention, no political intention,” Ms. Haddad said in an interview. “When journalists called me and asked for the whole list, they received the whole list. It’s not that we hide that.”
Intent aside, Hassan Jabareen, director of Adalah, a legal advocacy center for Arab minority rights, said the episode revealed a deeper issue of invisibility for Israel’s 1.4 million Palestinian citizens and more than 300,000 Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem.
Arabs have served in Israel’s Parliament since its opening in 1949, but only one has been a government minister. A 2011 Adalah report found that 6 percent of the state’s Civil Service jobs and 1.2 percent of tenure-track positions in universities were filled by Arabs.
“On TV, if we open Channel 1, Channel 2, Channel 10, in prime time, we don’t see Arabs as producers, as anchors — we don’t see them, they do not exist,” Mr. Jabareen complained. Each channel has an analyst of Arab affairs, but they are Jews, he added, “sending a message that in fact the Arabs are foreigners, this is why we need a mediator between us and them.”Yes, there is job discrimination against Arabs and everyone here knows it. But there is also job discrimination here against anyone who is not from Ashkenazi (Western) background and often also against anyone who is not secular Ashkenazi and against anyone who hasn't served in the army. It's not just the Arabs.

In the early afternoon a mortar wounded three Israeli Arabs who work as taxi drivers tasked with taking a group of Gazans from the crossing into Israel for medical care. Roughly an hour later, the IAF hit the site from where the mortar was launched.
The attack took place at the Erez Crossing in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council while a goup of ill Palestinians was making the crossing. Soldiers evacuated the wounded as mortars continued to fall.Still waiting to hear any international condemnation of Hamas (which has taken responsibility) for firing on wounded 'Palestinians.' I don't expect to hear any.
One of the Palestinian attemtping to make the crossing spoke to Ynet and said "the war does what it wants with us. I hope both sides put an end to it. There is too much fear in Gaza and in Israel. All we wanted was to get medical care."

Abed Ra'asab, from East Jerusalm, arrived at the crossing to transfer a young relative of his suffering cancer to a hospital in Jeruslam and witnessed the scene. When he arrived at the Palestinian side of the crossing the attack began. "It was so close, but thank God I was close to a shelter, those wounded were farther away. The (IDF) paramedics quickly took care of the wounded.
The mortar hit one of the few active crossings connecting Israel to Gaza, specifically the one intended for human passage. A car belonging to one of the Israeli-Arabs sustained damage. A young Palestinian girl who was at the crossing suffered anxiety and she was seen shaking from fear.

Mendi Safadi, an Israeli Druse who served as former Likud deputy minister Ayoub Kara’s chief of staff, has independently met with members of the liberal and democratic Syrian opposition who oppose the Islamists and want friendly relations with Israel.Safadi also claims that if the US supported the non-Islamist rebels, the war could be over in months. Safadi, who met with senior opposition officials last week, has traveled in the region, met with activists, and relayed messages from them to the Prime Minister’s Office.
He was responsible for relaying the congratulatory letters from the Syrian opposition to then President-elect Reuven Rivlin.
Islamic State should have been dealt with months ago, when it was concentrated in much smaller territory, Safadi told The Jerusalem Post in an interview on Sunday.
“Islamic State is a cancer,” and just like the disease, “it needed to be attacked before it spread.”

Islamic State could have been finished off three months ago if the US had acted decisively at that time, said Safadi, but now that the group has spread, it will require a much more robust ground operation to eliminate the group’s hold on territory in Iraq and Syria.
Safadi showed the Post documentation identifying two apparent spies who infiltrated Islamic State and were sending him information about the group in return for cash.
Not all of the fighters affiliated with Islamic State are true believers, he said, noting that some have come to the conclusion on their own that the group is extreme and dangerous.

Safadi also claimed that his sources in Islamic State told him about the group’s upcoming declaration of a caliphate, a month-and-a-half before it was to occur.
Safadi said that he shared the intelligence with Israel and contacts in the United States six months ago, but no action that he is aware of was taken to halt the group at that point.

The journalist, Majd Kayyal, the editor of the website for Adalah - The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, is suspected of traveling to Lebanon for a conference commemorating 40-years of the Lebanese newspaper As-Saphir, where he came in contact with Hezbollah agents.
Adalah lawyers met yesterday with Kayyal in the Shin Bet Prison in Kishon, for the first time since his arrest.
Kayyal told his lawyers that the investigation is focusing on his visit to Lebanon and explained that his visit was part of his job as a journalist.Adalah receives major funding from the New Israel Fund.
Kayyal claims he was being held in a cell 24 hours a day, without any daylight, a bed or a lamp, and that he had lost his sense of time. He claims he was intensively interrogated and questioned about his private life.Boo. Hoo.
The Haifa Magistrate's Court released Kayyal to house arrest on Thursday until the next hearing on his case which is April 22.Maybe he can join Azmi Bishara in Qatar.

“I don't want to prophesy about the future,” Feiglin told Arutz Sheva in an interview. But he expected that a compromise wording would be found, which would satisfy the Palestinian Authority (PA) and allow the release of terrorists, including Israeli Arabs, while enabling Jewish Home, led by Bennett, to remain in the government.

Last week, Jewish Home chairman Naftali Bennett announced that his party will leave the coalition if Israel agrees to release Israeli-Arab terrorists as part of a framework agreement to extend peace talks with the PA. But Feiglin said he doubted this would be the case. Feiglin said that he had raised the issue with Jewish Home already in the first round of prisoner releases, impressing upon Bennett and his fellow party MKs how unjust releasing terrorists was.
At least now, Feiglin said, the party had woken up to his message, and was at least publicly agreeing with him that the prisoner release was immoral and should not take place.
Priorities man, priorities!“The release of terrorists is a moral injustice that must opposed in any way possible,” said Feiglin. “I don't see any difference in their being Israeli or not. Just the opposite, with the Palestinian Authority demanding that they be released, we see who these Israeli Arabs really affiliate with.”

A senior Israeli government official told Channel 2 Saturday that, despite the ultimatum of Jewish Home (Bayit Yehudi) Chairman Naftali Bennett to leave the government over the issue, "there will be no deal [for peace talks to resume or free Jonathan Pollard] if Israeli-Arab terrorists are not released."
Official progress on peace talks from Israel remains somewhat murky, with no unilateral declaration that a deal has or has not been made.
But several top officials from left-wing or center-left parties - including HaTnua, Labor, and Yesh Atid - have threatened to leave the government entirely and go to elections in the event that a deal is not struck between Israel, the US, and the Palestinian Authority (PA) to continue the peace process.If there was any prospect of the 'talks' leading anywhere, there might at least be something to discuss. But given that nearly everyone admits that the 'peace process' is going nowhere, why bother?

MK Hanin Zoabi (Balad) responded to Muhammad's pro-Israel Facebook page and video by saying that “the state of Israel has trained him into obedience. Sometimes, the oppressed identifies with the oppressor because he lacks pride and political awareness.”
Muhammad is unfazed by such statements and vows to “stand with the Jewish people until the last day of my life.”Hanin ought to go live in 'Palestine' for a while. Oh... wait... she couldn't be an MK there, could she?

Fact: Israel never agreed to releasing pre-Oslo Israeli Arab terrorists as part of the 4th round of releases and Secretary of State John Kerry misled the Palestinians and told them that Israel had agreed to release them.
This is not something told reporters by tertiary sources.
It isn't even something told on background not for attribution.
It is something that senior Israeli ministers have said for attribution.
And they have said this in interviews broadcast on Israel Radio over the past week.
And yet. this morning, Israel Radio diplomatic correspondent, Chico Menashe, declined to mention this critical fact in his long report this morning on Israel Radio Reshet Bet's morning news magazine. Instead he opted for a bizarre narrative that the United States was being too generous to Israel and that this created a problem.
Again: the 4th release as far as the Palestinians are concerned includes the Israeli Arabs. And this wasn't going to happen in a vacuum.
PM Netanyahu made this clear from the start.
This is a mess caused by Secretary of State Kerry's decision to apparently make the assumption that he could easily force PM Netanyahu to release the Israeli Arabs.
But PM Netanyahu was absolutely honest in explaining that it would take very special and unique circumstances to make it possible for the Cabinet to approve the release of the Israeli Arab terrorists.We want peace so badly that they must want it also.... No... Not really...

"You can facilitate, you can push, you can nudge, but the parties themselves have to make fundamental decisions to compromise," Kerry said in Algiers at the start of a trip to North Africa on Thursday.
"The leaders have to lead, and they have to be able to see a moment when it's there," he added, showing signs of frustration after his months-long peace efforts appeared to be in tatters.

Palestinian sources told Ma'an that the nine-hour meeting with US Special Envoy Martin Indyk was attended by PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat, Head of Palestinian intelligence Majid Faraj, and Israeli negotiators Tzipi Livni and Yitzhak Molcho.What needs to be said - but is not being said enough - is that the real reason these 'talks' are falling apart is because Israel has done nothing but give and the 'Palestinians' have done nothing but receive. That's why Israel refused to release the fourth batch of terrorists. It decided it would rather let the talks blow up now than have them - inevitably - blow up in a month, after the precedent of releasing 'Israeli Arabs' on the 'Palestinian Authority's say-so had been set.
The sources described the meeting as a "fierce political battle", with Martin Indyk struggling to control heated exchanges between both sides.
Erekat reportedly told the Israeli side that "we are here to negotiate in the name of the UN-recognized State of Palestine, not in the name of a Palestinian Authority whose inputs and outputs are controlled by Israel."

"Since Israel failed to release the last group of prisoners, the State of Palestine is no longer obliged to postpone its rights to accede to multilateral treaties and conventions," the PLO said in a statement Wednesday.
"Despite the escalation of oppressive Israeli policies such as the killing of Palestinian civilians, settlement construction, raids on vulnerable communities, arbitrary arrests and detentions, home demolitions and the removal of residency rights, we remained committed to the negotiations process and supported US efforts," it added.

I am an Orthodox Jew - some would even call me 'ultra-Orthodox.' Born in Boston, I was a corporate and securities attorney in New York City for seven years before making aliya to Israel in 1991 (I don't look it but I really am that old :-). I have been happily married to the same woman for thirty-five years, and we have eight children (bli ayin hara) ranging in age from 13 to 33 years and nine grandchildren.
