How things work.... Jordanian edition....
June 5 was the anniversary of the outbreak of the Six Day War. This year, it coincided with the 28th day of the Jewish month of Iyyar, which is the date on the Jewish calendar on which the Old City of Jerusalem was liberated. At the time, the Arabs were lying, telling their people that they were winning the war.
But here's a cable from the British Ambassador to Jordan to Britain's Foreign Office that tells a very different story. It was sent 49 years ago today, June 6, 1967.

The false reports of Arab victories were not only for the Arab internal consumption. In Poland, the media was reporting about the Egyptian march on Tel Aviv and the total destruction of the entire Israeli Airforce. This cable is interesting in that it proves that the Soviets, and thus the Soviet Block, were well aware that the Arabs were loosing and yet chose to lie to us. Why? Did they have plans to change the outcome of the war?
One thing is certain from the cable, that at least Jordan considered the UK, the USA and the Soviet Union as allies who would jointly work on their behalf at the UN Security Council, and they did. Too bad for them, that Israel had unexpectedly managed to take so much territory in such a short time and it took them until 1978 to wrestle the Sinai from Israel, in exchange for a piece of worthless paper.
