Netanyahu tells Obama what he wants to hear
In a lengthy recounting of how the Obama administration reversed itself on Syria's chemical weapons, the Wall Street Journal comes up with this (Hat Tip: Barak Ravid). On Sept. 11, Mr. Kerry spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said he believed Russia wasn't bluffing and that a deal was possible, according to American and Middle Eastern officials briefed on the exchange. Israel shared U.S. concerns that strikes could strengthen rebels linked with al Qaeda and allow them to seize Mr. Assad's weapons. The good news is that this argues against the claim that Israel was pushing for a US attack on Syria (and against the claim that the government of Israel controls AIPAC, which has been a huge proponent of an attack on Syria.
The bad news is that it's probably the wrong move, although my guess is that by September 11 the dhecision had already been made, there was no point in trying to oppose it, so Netanyahu sought brownie points by telling Obama what he wanted to hear.
What could go wrong?
