Beware the fallout: Iran building new mountainside nuclear plant 45 miles north of Tehran
Reports in the British media claim that Iran is building a new nuclear plant in a mountainside 45 miles north of Tehran. The source of the reports is an exiled Iranian opposition group. The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) says that initial construction of the complex near the town of Damavand has been completed by companies closely associated with Iran’s Defence Ministry and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. The NCRI previously exposed the existence of the uranium enrichment plant at Natanz and the heavy water reactor at Arak, which are both important components of the Iranian nuclear programme. The group has also previously made inaccurate and unverifiable claims, although the Times says that German intelligence officials confirmed Western countries have been tracking developments at Damavand for several years.
Apparently, the site consists of four tunnels, two of which are 550m long, plus six enormous halls and four large warehouses. A second phase of building will reportedly add a further thirty tunnels and thirty warehouses to the complex.
The latest quarterly report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in May revealed that Iran is continuing its nuclear development, increasing its stockpile of 20 per cent enriched uranium while continuing development at Arak and Natanz. What could go wrong?
