She's Jewish too
Well, what do you know? The nurse in the famous 1945 Kissing Sailor photograph is an Austrian Jew who lost her parents in the Holocaust, and herself barely escaped to the US in 1939. The photographer, Alfred Eisenstaedt, was also Jewish.

"The photographer, Alfred Eisenstaedt, was also Jewish." Quite a man, and quite a life story, Alfred Eisenstaedt. A German Jew, Mr. Eisenstaedt, a WW1 German Army veteran, emigrated to the US in 1935 to escape the rapidly worsening Nazi persecution of German Jews. He lived the rest of his life in New York City, passing away in 1995 at the age of 98.
He preferred using natural light and besides the famous "kissing sailor" Times Square VJ-Day photo, Mr. Eisenstaedt also photographed many covers for Life magazine over the years. I remember a truly beautiful photo of Sophia Loren that he shot. He also did a magnificent series of beautiful lighthouse photos, donated to a charitable group doing fundraising for restoration of old lighthouses. Some of his photos were also in that truly beautiful, amazing collection of photos published as a book entitled "The Family of Man".
