Vatican calls Israel 'baby killers'

Giulio Meotti reports that a representative of Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Vatican Council for Culture, has accused Israel of being 'baby killers' as a result of this week's action in Gaza.
The Catholic Church high official equated Israel’s operation in Gaza against terror groups with the New Testament story of Herod’s slaughter of Jewish babies in his effort to kill Jesus.
Ravasi, who is one of the most popular Catholic cardinals and the director of the Church’s policy on culture, called Israelis baby-killers in a shameless form of anti-Semitism which subtly accuses the Jewish State of trying to murder the new Jesus, symbolized by the Palestinian people.
The Vatican official’s modern blood libel against Israel was delivered during the presentation of Pope Benedict’s new book about the life of Jesus. However, Ravasi's theme – the Jews as Herod, who killed all the innocent babies because his heart was set on killing Jesus – was much beloved by Medieval organizers of pogroms.
The vicar-general of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, William Shomali, said on Vatican Radio that “what is happening in Gaza now is a vicious circle of violence”. The auxiliary bishop then declared that “it’s difficult to know who started it”. How difficult?
A few weeks ago, in an interview with the Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana, Shomali claimed that “hatred of Christians” is the Talmud itself. "The Talmud, the holy book studied by the ultra-orthodox, more highly venerated than the Bible itself, invites religious hatred, speaks badly of Jesus, and even worse of Mary and, in general, of Christians,” the bishop said, adding that “in Israeli schools, love for the other is not taught, but rather the destruction of the other”.
Actually, you can't find the Talmudic passages that talk about Jesus because they've been censored out by Church-inspired governments for centuries. I have a small pamphlet in which all the censored-out words are listed, and in recent years, new volumes based on handwritten texts have added the censored words in the margins. In fact, countless Jewish books were censored to avoid offending the Church's sensitivities.

But as to the matter at hand, Ravasi's comments show that he is totally ignoring the use of 'Palestinian' children as human shields by the terror organizations. We Jews do not have a concept of 'turning the other cheek.' We are taught that if someone comes to kill you, you must kill him first. And yes, that includes 'Palestinian' terrorists.

Read the whole thing.

Utterly sickening. This horrible antisemite, Ravasi, needs to be sent pictures of the murdered children of the Fogel family by his precious "Palestinians".

Speaking as a former Catholic, one who was born and raised Catholic, and became a Protestant Christian by adult choice, I find the Cardinal's remarks a shameful embarrassment to his Church.

The so-called leaders of the Catholic Church ought to engage in some introspection on their own deep failings. Decades of cover-ups of priests' systematic molestation of Catholic children and decades of cowardly silence at Muslim persecution of Catholics and other Christians in Muslim countries would be two excellent topics for this introspection.

Also, these moral fools in clerical garb might want to reflect on centuries-old Christian thought on Just War Theory, going back centiuries to Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas.

I'm no theologian, just a thinking Christian, a firm friend and admirer of Israel and the Jewish people. Israel's morally totally justified campaign in Gaza was made necessary by Hamas and other Islamist terrorist groups' attacks on the civilian people of Israel. Israel would have been no less justified if it had launched a large ground offensive to destroy Hamas and the other Islamist terrorist groups in Gaza. The resulting civilian deaths and destruction would have entirely been the responsibility of Hamas and the other Islamist terrorist gangs, who caused the war in the first place.

Here's an interesting and educational comment from blog Instapundit. It sums up the ridiculous constraints that what currently passes for Western Civilization coerce from Israel:

“Back in mid-June, during the great Paris weapons show, the Rafael pavilion was absolutely the busiest around, and everybody wanted to look at the new, exciting, Iron Dome system, the greatest achievement in rocket defense ever. But by the end of the show, Rafael hadn’t made a single sale. The Arrow sold well, other systems did great – Iron Dome wasn’t moving. So they contacted their big clients, the serious ones, and asked what gives. And those clients told them no one except Israel has any use for these things. Because in any normal, sane country, if some hooligans were to start targeting civilians with rockets – the army would go and kill them.” Exactly.

No way! If you send him the pictures, he will applaud them. I was listening to a shiur tonight on Chabad.org about antisemitism. Did you know that the Catholic church did nothing because they felt it was a "punishment" for us? I am sooo glad I don't have "their" god. (And yes, I said shelo asani goy with extra kavana.)

Ravasi has been awarded by Italian friends of Israel these days and favourably reported on Italian jewish press. A joke ? No. The truth is that Meotti assetion were not grounded.
A sad story...
