US Supreme Court upholds Obamacare mandate
Unless Obama loses the election and Congress overturns the law, American-Israelis just got a step closer to paying a penalty for not having American health insurance. A sharply divided US Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the centerpiece of US President Barack Obama's signature healthcare overhaul law that requires that most Americans get insurance by 2014 or pay a financial penalty.I wonder how many more expats will give up their American citizenship because of this.
"The Affordable Care Act's requirement that certain individuals paya financial penalty for not obtaining health insurance may reasonably be characterized as a tax," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the court's majority in the opinion.
"Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it, or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness," he concluded. The vote was 5-4.

Much more about the decision here. Roberts was the swing vote. Four justices would have invalidated the whole thing and four would have upheld the whole thing. Obama insisted in 2009 that Obamacare wasn't a tax.

Carl, your header is incorrect. SCOTUS did not uphold O-Care as a mandate, but as a TAX - something the regime has said that it is not (still on their website). This has fired up the conservative base something huge. Romney's response was excellent. Donations to his campaign rose over $200K immediately after the ruling.
Now, this law in place the precedent has be firmly established: The federal government now has the authority and power to control the actions (and even their expressed thoughts when they choose to do so)of every citizen of the United States.
The majority of the US Supreme Court have willfully broken their oath to uphold the Constitution of this nation. They have effectively taken away all of the rights of the citizens and given it over to the federal government.
If this monstrosity is not repealed next year, then I have become a defeatist - and acknowledge that this once great nation has been destroyed from within.
