Whom the Muslim world hates
Mona Eltahawy pens a lengthy article about the status of women in the Arab-Muslim world, which she is free to do because she lives in the United States. I urge you to read the whole thing - it's quite blunt.I find it interesting that she does not mention Israel, which is really too bad, because the contrast between how Israel treats its women and how they are treated in countries like Egypt, Yemen and Saudi Arabia is stunning. I also wonder whether we would already have peace with the Arab-Muslim world if there were women in positions of power there. I would bet that we would at least be closer.
Don't hold your breath thinking we're going to find out anytime soon. The fact that Ms. Eltahawy does her writing from the US tells you all you need to know about that.

Eltahaway did not write about Israel becasue she is a vehement anti-Israel pro-BDS activist and cannot bring herself to write anything positive about the Jewish state. Why you would think that if women took over the Arab world it would be any different is beyond me. The international women's forum run by the UN was one of the starkest examples of antisemitism in recent history. Simply becasue someone is pro their own empowerment doesn't mean they reject all the evil that they have been taught.
Elise,
I know exactly who Eltahawy is. I've written about her several times and actually drew some flack back from her on Twitter during last year's J Street conference, where she spoke.
I wanted to make two points: First, to show someone who is so anti-Israel how ironic that is when Israel is the only country in the region that addresses her concerns. Of course, she won't admit that (and if Chayma wakes up today, I guarantee a diatribe about segregated buses in Beit Shemesh, as if that compares with genital mutilation, underage marriages and state-supported wife beating!), but I want everyone else to see it.
Second, although Eltahawy and other Muslim women may hate Israel as much as Muslim men do, I have my doubts that women in charge would order suicide bombings and military attacks quite as quickly as the men do. Carry them out, yes. Help others to carry them out, yes. But order them? How many women like Amina Mona are sitting in Israeli jails? How many men? Obvious answer - a lot more men (and in case you forgot, I named Mona because she was the one woman who was notorious for bossing the others in prison).

Why Do They Hate Us? They Don’t.

Mona Eltahawy, an Arab-American journalist, created a firestorm when Foreign Policy Magazine published her article “Why Do They Hate Us?”. If you thought the they and us refers to Muslims and Americans, you’d be wrong. In fact, they is Arab men, and us is women. Her article is a stabbing critique of Arab culture, which she finds to be heavily misogynistic.

In her article, Mona Eltahawi enumerates numerous abuses Arab women face. However, none of these inhumanities–not even female genital mutilation–can be considered as problematic as the cannibalism and human sacrifice that the indigenous peoples of the Americas sometimes engaged in. And yet, whatever failings the indigenous peoples had in their culture and civilization, it is now widely understood who the real savage was.
We can continue to pat ourselves on the back for how civilized we are, how free our women are, how we are so much better than them. But, none of that will change the fact that we are the ones waging wars of aggression and occupation in the Muslim world. We are the ones killing hundreds of thousands of their innocent men, women, and children.
It was in another article, also published in Foreign Policy with almost the exact same title–Why They Hate Us?–that Prof. Stephen Walt calculated the number of Muslim lives the U.S. has extinguished: “a reasonable upper bound for Muslim fatalities…is well over one million, equivalent to over 100 Muslim fatalities for every American lost.” To use a jazzy catchphrase of my own: mutilating a baby girl’s genitals is horrible, but dropping a bomb on her head is much worse.

Hey Carl,
About underage marriages, do you want me to put a poll out in Israel questioning how many men want to marry an underage girl?
The % that would want to would be somewhere in the high 90's
If this stupid ignorant bitch responds, i'll tear her to shreds
And to the equally stupid Elise,
Israel expelled and made many refugees, the Naqba?? Why do you think Arab women would ignore that you stupid *&^%%?? What this has to do with womens rights? How about the rights of the women who were uprooted, expelled, murdered, raped, killed, and who lost their families when Ben Gurion was the Hitler of Palestine?
