Former member of Russian Joint Chiefs of Staff: Russia will defend Iran and Syria as if it had been attacked

Here's an interview with a former member of the Russian Joint Chiefs of Staff who says that Russia will defend Iran and Syria if they are attacked, that Russia will regard an attack on Iran or Syria like an attack on Russia and that NATO action in Libya was like Hitler in Poland (funny - weren't the Russians aligned with Hitler when he attacked Poland? Yup).

Let's go to the videotape (Hat Tip: Will).

Could you see Russia attacking Israel? Could you see the US sitting silently on the sidelines if it did, waiting for a UN Security Council resolution? What could go wrong?

And you thought Obama had 'reset' US relations with Russia....

I don't see Russia attacking Israel, BUT, I do see Russia attack the US, if it all kicks off!!

NATO will attack Syria and Russia will provide men and material support to Syria. Russia has more financially rewarding ties with Syria and Iran than with the US. Besides, they're protecting the world from Facism, remember?

The Russian armed forces are in such disarray that if they actually attacked Israel the outcome is unclear.

Should they actually prevail, short of using nuclear weapons they would so deplete their current conventional forces that the Chinese could likely just walk into eastern Russia and take whatever they like.

This is a death wish for Russia, short of nuclear confrontation.

Their air force is rusting faster than they can replace it. Their tanks are in the wrong locations, they have no real expeditionary forces.

Compare with the US where there are numerous Marine Expeditionary units that can drop large conventional forces on any shore anywhere.

The Russians are at least rational. This is clearly a bluff, assuming they are not crazy enough to go nuclear.

Of course Russia will attack Israel! That's where their Jews escaped to. Just like the Euros not reining in Turkey as a NATO member in their frontal attack on Israel, bashing in IDF skulls with their flotilla. It's the next 6 million for the mentally bloody diseased anti-semite Euros and Russians.

To prove this wrong, the mentally healthy Euros and Russians better speak up much much louder to stop this process. You've (Euros) always counted on the U.S. to rein it in, but we stupidly elected a marcuse/alinsky marxist caliphate activist as our President. They are rushing to finish this before the election removes his claws from being able to wield the mighty U.S. military on behalf of the marxists and jihadis (as they did in Libya). Euros and Russians who aren't murdering Jew haters better get out on the streets and voice the EVIL of what is going on in your government.

Geoffrey Carman,

What if Russia did go nuclear and attacked Israel? What if they believe that if they launch a nuclear attack on Israel, Obama won't respond.

For that matter, what if they believe that if they launch a nuclear attack on the US, Obama won't respond?

Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) only works if both sides are willing to pull the trigger. For Obama to pull the trigger under any circumstances goes against his most basic beliefs.

Hi Carl.
I think you exactly pointed out the weak spot of America.
He's no Kennedy , neighter a Reagan.
He's a community organiser. And the Russians and the Rest of the world know. You're nothing if you're not willing to do what it takes.
Have a great week, thanks for the HT!

Abaham Rabinovich in his study of the 1973 war disclosed: the nuclear forces of both the Soviet Union and the United States went on the highest alert and Russian paratroopers were preparing to board military transports after Sharon surrounded the Egyptian Third Army and turned the war around.

So if Bashar is out, who comes in? Muslim Bros? Iranian Mullah Republican Guards? I mean it's not like Egypt, where Bush had a "democracy project" (now about to be dragged through the streets by the Muslim Bros - did you notice the American is the son of one of the only Republicans in Obama's administration?). Maybe, in this case, the Russians are refusing to help turn over Syria to Beslan-type machete people, who bomb the Russians and slice up students? Just wondering what the motivation would be for the Russians sticking by Bashar...

@Sunlight.
That's exactly what Lavrov pointed out as reason for his veto use.
Who are the people poised to take over? The Russian foreign minister said extremist groups that provoke violence in Syria should be assessed in a proper way, which has not been done. He said the resolution did not set enough demands on anti-government armed groups.

Carl,
G-d save us all from crazy people with nuclear weapons.

If the Russians are willing to go nuclear it really does not matter. In their defense, they held off for the entire cold war. It seems hard to believe they would use nuclear weapons over Syria or Iran or any proxy.

Even knowing Obama would not retaliate, they have to consider Israel's arsenal. (I wonder if the Israeli's have targetting solutions preset for Russian targets? I imagine they have for every country, since you just never know when you will need it, and cities aren't moving that much so it is easy to have ready).

I forget what the range of a Shavit class ICBM is, but if they can reach orbit with it, they can hit pretty much anywhere with it, and Russia is not that far away.

The rest of the Middle East, hashem yerachem if they ever get nukes.

Herb: The USSR in 1973 was VERY different from Russia in 2011.

They were at the height of their build up then.

Between the fall of the USSR in the 90's and now, they have spent almost nothing on keeping their forces up to snuff.

I would not be surprised to see China invade one of these days if they decide they need the resources. (Bear and the Dragon by Tom Clancy is a fun walk through how that might work) But the Russian forces are at a pathetic level.

So pathetic that if they seriously mustered conventional forces against Israel, it could sufficiently deplete them in the process, even if they won, to leave themselves wide open for China to just walk in. The border with China is on the scale of the border between the US and Canada. Very hard to defend at full strength.

I pray for rational leadership in Russia. And a new president in 2012.
