Obama names Orthodox Jew as Chief of Staff

President Obama has named budget director Jack Lew as his third chief of staff in three years in office. Lew is described by the media as an Orthodox Jew (Hat Tip: Will).
President Obama named Jack Lew, an Orthodox Jew, to be his next chief of staff.

Lew will replace William Daley, who will be leaving at the end of the month.

Obama announced the personnel changes Monday at a press conference.

Lew is the director of the Office of Management and Budget, a Cabinet-level position and a post he also filled during the Clinton administration. He previously was Obama's deputy secretary of state.

Daley is leaving after just over a year on the job. He had succeeded Rahm Emanuel, who left the White House to run successfully for Chicago's mayor.

Lew, like Emanuel, has close Jewish community ties.

There had been speculation in the organized Jewish community about whether Obama would fill a top spot with someone close to the Jewish community after the departure last month of Dennis Ross, who had been Obama's top Iran policy adviser.
I'm sure that Obama's unacknowledged problems with the Jewish community have nothing at all to do with this. /sarc.

Unlike much of the Orthodox Jewish community today, Lew has impeccable liberal credentials. He is Sabbath observant, although there is an interesting story about President Clinton calling him on the Sabbath here.

Somehow I doubt this is Obama's personal choice. Looking at his face in the following picture, I would say he is thinking: "not another effing jooo". His face is very tight, unlike when he greets his mozlem brothers with huge grins!!

Well, I for one don't thing the Orthodox Union would be mazal tov-ing so prominently if this guy were an anomaly. The conservative leanings of the Orthodox may be a topic for an upcoming Mythbusters episode...
