Assad threatens to 'burn the whole region' if West takes action against Syria
In an interview in London's Sunday Telegraph, his first since the uprising began in Syria seven months ago, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad threatens to 'burn the whole region' if the West takes action against Syria.Western countries "are going to ratchet up the pressure, definitely," he said. "But Syria is different in every respect from Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen. The history is different. The politics is different.Assad describes the uprising as a "struggle between Islamism and pan-Arabism [secularism], adding: "We've been fighting the Muslim Brotherhood since the 1950s and we are still fighting with them."
"Syria is the hub now in this region. It is the fault line, and if you play with the ground you will cause an earthquake … Do you want to see another Afghanistan, or tens of Afghanistans?
"Any problem in Syria will burn the whole region. If the plan is to divide Syria, that is to divide the whole region."
Curiously, Israel is not even mentioned in the article, although one has to wonder which of his other neighbors he would attack in the event that the West takes action against Syria. Recall the first Gulf War when Iraq attacked Israel after the West (including Syria at the time) went after Saddam Hussein for attacking Iraq. Are we about to see a repeat? Will Israel stand aside as it did 20 years ago? Don't bet on it.

hmmm. So, he's fighting Islamism for the past-its-due-date cause of Alawite-fronted pan-Arab secularist Baathsm? And who will assist him in his burn-baby-burn earthquake? Will Iran, whose Hamas buddies are already edgily eyeing their semi-packed suitcases in Damascus, really jump off the cliff with this guy? Would the Hezzies help him by expending their rocket arsenal on a heretic? Like the Mexican-standoff finale to Good, Bad and the Ugly, the enemy of my enemy may be my friend, but how to sort through all those troublesome frenemies?
Don't bet on it. ----- What are the odds? I think if the U.S. and Europe asked Israel to stand down, that they would. You have to admit Israel's missile defense is a lot better than in the 90s. So, other than incitement, I don't see the West going after Syria, like they did Libya.
Ah... are they attempting to scare us?
Bring it on. Take all the Islamist terrorists with you and throw in the rest of the beasts. Make my day, and make the day of the hundreds of innocents list each week to the butchers called muslims.
Ha. I'd have a block party if they burned the muslim brotherhood and their cronies.
Next stop? Iran, then Egypt then....keep them going. Perhaps any innocent muslims * if there are any non-Nazis left after 30 plus years of brainwashing and imbreeding - perhaps they'll have some peace in their lives.
