US ambassador Dan Shapiro on #J14 (our 'social justice' protests)
US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro posts on his Facebook page (in Hebrew) about #J14, our self-proclaimed 'social justice' protests. I'll use Ron Kampeas' translation rather than reinvent the wheel. The United States has no position on the internal matters of the state of Israel. But we admire the strength of Israeli democracy. The citizens of Israel know that they can demonstrate in the streets without fear of violence, and that's not the case in many other places in the region. The people and the government will decide together how they will deal with the serious social and economic problems about which people are demonstrating. And we are confident our democratic partner will come out of this period even stronger. That Shapiro could post something like this, shows how low the Obama administration's expectations for this region are. Frankly, it's also patronizing.
On the other hand, given that London is currently burning over what was a peaceful demonstration, perhaps in 2011 even the most basic standards of decency have to be recognized.
