Turkey stops Iranian plane enroute to Syria, claims it didn't find anything
Turkey forced an Iranian Air jet that was flying to Syria to land in Turkey for inspection on Wednesday. But then the Turks concluded there were no weapons on contraband on board and allowed the plane to leave (Hat Tip: Joshua I). According to earlier reports, the Turks stopped the plane on suspicion that it was carrying weapons and nuclear components.
"We gave the Iranian plane advance permission to pass through Turkey en route to Syria," the Foreign Ministry said. "The agreement was that it will land for an inspection. We did not spot anything unusual in the plane's cargo and allowed it to continue."
A news agency said earlier that Turkey has ordered a cargo plane carrying arms from Iran to Syria to land at a southeastern Turkish airport.
Dogan news agency said the plane landed in the city of Diyarbakir on Wednesday.
Turkey's foreign ministry could not immediately confirm the report and military authorities were not available for comment.
A senior security official in Ankara said that army forces searched the plane for weapons and items used for the production of nuclear weapons.
