Pessimism on what comes next in Egypt

Barry Rubin points out the numbers in the latest Pew poll to show that what's likely to follow the current riots in Egypt is - unfortunately - not a liberal democracy. At least not if the Egyptian people are asked what they want.
In Egypt, 30 percent like Hizballah (66 percent don't). 49 percent are favorable toward Hamas (48 percent are negative); and 20 percent smile (72 percent frown) at al-Qaida. Roughly speaking, one-fifth of Egyptians applaud the most extreme Islamist terrorist group, while around one-third back revolutionary Islamists abroad. This doesn't tell us what proportion of Egyptians want an Islamist government at home, but it is an indicator.

In Egypt, 82 percent want stoning for those who commit adultery; 77 percent would like to see whippings and hands cut off for robbery; and 84 percent favor the death penalty for any Muslim who changes his religion.

Asked if they supported "modernizers" or "Islamists" only 27 percent said modernizers while 59 percent said Islamists:

Is this meaningless? Last December 20 I wrote that these "horrifying figures in Egypt...one day might be cited to explain an Islamist revolution there....What this analysis also shows is that a future Islamist revolution in Egypt and Jordan is quite possible.
And in Jordan, the numbers look even worse.... (Thanks to Michael Totten for the idea, but your like to Barry's post is wrong!).

The point is popular opinion in Egypt and Jordan are radical - and opposed to peace and co-existence with Israel. Israeli leaders who keep pretending nothing will change for the worse are doing the country no real favors.

Its time for Israel to take its head out of the peace sands and deal with the reality of the Middle East as it is and not as Jewish wishful thinking would like it to be.

In our lifetime, it should be a truism that in the region, things stand to get a lot worse before they will get better. We can expect more people to suffer and die in the meantime - and territory for peace in the face of Arab radicalism is not only foolhardy, it is downright crazy to pursue it.

What a despicable sight. Your fear mongering, lack of insight, lack of courage and constant bickering will get you nothing but more of the same as you claim that everybody else is the problem. So nice to see that your people are still refering to everyone Jews as "goyem". You people denigrate everyone you meet with claims of being the "chosen people" but get pissed when they discriminate against you accordingly. Get with the program and join the fight for survival. This species could use all the help it can get.

Hmmm...after blog owner approval. I find that rather dubious indeed. I never seem to desire such administration on any of my blogs or articles. I welcome any comment, especially inflammatory ones, or those that disagree. Power is corrupt, period. And it will corrupt anyone who touches. A captcha should suffice, really bro.
