Obama becomes Peres' speechwriter

On Thursday, Shimon Peres delivered a speech to a Jerusalem meeting of the Jewish Policy and Planning Institute (JPPI) that could have been written by Barack Hussein Obama.
President Shimon Peres said that Israel cannot survive without the help of the United States, at a Jerusalem conference of the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute on Thursday.

Peres said that, "for our existence, we need the friendship of the United States of America."

Speaking of how Israel can give back to the US, he said that just "as the US is trying to understand the security needs of Israel, we Israelis ourselves must understand the security needs of the US." He continued, "We cannot give back to the United States what the US is giving us, but in our own small way, we can be of help."

Connecting two of the largest issues on the Israeli - and American - agenda, the president said Israel could be of help to the US by enabling an "anti-Iran coalition in the Middle East, and the contribution will not be by declaration, but if we stop the secondary conflict between us and the Palestinians," in order to allow the US to focus on the Iranian threat.
Peres even followed up by attacking George Bush!

Why is this wrong? Let me count the ways:

1. The Arab countries are not and will not be part of an effort to stop Iran, regardless of whether Israel makes a deal with the 'Palestinians,' because the Arab countries are afraid that Obama has hung them out to dry versus Iran. That's why you see things like Egypt renewing trade ties and commercial flights between Cairo and Tehran. That's why you see Iran being allowed to play a role in the determination of an Iraqi ruling coalition. And that's why you see the Lebanese government unwilling to confront Hezbullah. Meanwhile, the Europeans have finally decided that self-preservation trumps the 'Palestinians' and they have gotten on board regarding Iran.

2. The 'Palestinians' are only a distraction from dealing with Iran because Obama makes them into one. Obama could concentrate on Iran if he wanted to. But he'd rather punish Israel for existing.

3. There is no deal on the table with the 'Palestinians' and there is not going to be one in the foreseeable future. No deal that could possibly be acceptable to Israel will be acceptable to the 'Palestinians.' And vice versa.

Time to put Shimon Peres out to pasture.

The time for Peres to be turned out to pasture was well before 1993. I appreciate the things he's done for Israel, mostly in the 50's and 60's, but he has long ceased to be anything but a negative influence, to the point of seriously damaging our security.

Shimon Peres is the stupidest man in Israel... the events of the past decade have taught him nothing.

Time to send him to the Old Folks home.
