International Telecommunications Union condemns Israeli 'control' over Lebanese telecom

The International Telecommunications Union has condemned Israel for 'piracy, interference and obstruction' of Lebanon's telecommunications. The plurality of countries abstained.
The International Telecommunication Union conference in Mexico condemned on Friday Israel's violation of Lebanon's telecommunications sector, saying that the sector has and is still being subject to Israeli interference, reported As Safir on Saturday.

It said that Lebanon's "mobile phone and land lines are being subject to Israeli piracy, interference, and obstruction."

Furthermore, the conference stressed Lebanon's "complete right" to be compensated for the harms that have been inflicted on the telecommunications network.

The condemnation came after extensive efforts by Telecommunications Minister Charbel Nahhas to convince the 124 participants to condemn Israel and the outcome was 43 voting in favor, 23 against, and 57 abstentions.
Is Lebanon being paranoid or is this really happening? Who cares. Even if it's not happening, it's great that the Lebanese fear it so much.

They certainly fear the Joos so much that they think Israel eavesdrops on them.

Carl, there is definitely an active frequency war from both sides. Hizbullah has, on numerous occasions taken over the northern frequencies of Galgalatz and Galei Tzahal (as the joke goes, "Why did it take so long to retrieve Galei Tzahal from Hizbullah broadcasts? No one could tell the difference"). Also, when I worked in Nahariya, I often listened to Lebanon 1 radio (105.1 FM, anywhere north of the Akko-Tzfat hwy.) I personally heard clearly non-arabs bursting in and was told that this was Tzahal comandeering the frequency to bad mouth Hizbullah. Also, Israel often has to jam Lebanese frequencies which accidentally pick up cellphone chatter from IDF bases near the border. While I'm sure this vote was another attempt at international deligitimization of Israel, it is NOT without any basis.
