Arab League backs Abu Bluff
Israel Radio reports that the Arab League has backed Abu Mazen, telling him not to resume 'direct talks' with Israel until there is a total 'settlement freeze' including in Jerusalem. They have also given the United States a month to try to resolve the issue. They will reconvene in a month to consider several alternatives presented by Abu Mazen, one of which is to call on the United States to recognize a 'Palestinian state' in the '1967 borders.' They cite Kosovo as a precedent. The key here is that Obama gets a month until after the US midterm elections.Here's more from the New York Times.
Ambassador Hesham Youssef, a senior aide to the secretary general of the Arab League, said Friday that the Arab ministers were supporting the Palestinian position “not to resume direct negotiations as long as settlement activities are ongoing.”The key - which the Times article does not mention - is that the Arab League is demanding a freeze in Jerusalem. That won't happen. Israel Radio reports that if the US refuses to recognize a 'Palestinian state,' the 'Palestinians' will turn to the UN Security Council, where the US has a veto. Will Obama use it? I would say that depends on the election results and whether in light of them Obama still feels he has a chance of being re-elected in 2012.
“This is an Arab and Palestinian position,” he said, speaking by telephone from Sirte, Libya, where the Arab League is meeting. “Not a single Arab country is saying go ahead with the talks.”
But he and other officials said that the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, had raised some additional options that he refused to discuss, but said that the Arab League would meet to discuss them in a month’s time.
“The month is for the different countries to discuss the different alternatives and give the opportunity for the Americans to perhaps succeed in extending the moratorium” on settlement building, Mr. Youssef said.

The Palestinians want Israel to capitulate. I don't see the peace talks resuming any time soon. They are dead.
Try telling that though to the stupid Tzipi Livni, who is unaware of the development with Arab League and who wants Israel to do Obama another favor.
Yeah sure and peace is just waiting around the corner.
