UNIFIL ran away during Tuesday's battle; UPDATED WITH VIDEO

Well, this ought to do wonders for whatever is left of UNIFIL's 'deterrent capabilities.'
And then there were others who got out of there as fast as they could:
Lebanese media have lashed out at the UN Interim Force, which includes Indonesian soldiers, in Lebanon, calling it an "impotent" bystander after a deadly border skirmish between Lebanese and Israeli forces.

"The impotent international forces beat a retreat, left the place of combat and watched the unfolding events from afar," said the daily As-Safir, which is close to the Shiite movement Hezbollah.

..."Why did UNIFIL not help the army, at least by offering first aid?" it questioned, citing senior sources involved in calming the border tension.

It said an organization such as UNIFIL was "obliged to deal with the evacuation of casualties."

On Tuesday, Hezbollah-run Al-Manar television aired images of two Indonesian soldiers, presumably from UNIFIL, leaving the site of the skirmish in a shared taxi.

New TV, which also sympathizes with Hezbollah, spoke of the "escape" of UNIFIL soldiers.
Read the whole thing (he has several more sources that talk about how UNIFIL didn't do its job on Tuesday). It's yet more proof of why 'international peacekeeping forces' cannot keep the peace between parties when at least one of them doesn't want it kept.

UPDATE 10:47 AM

Here's video from Hezbullah's al-Manar television station of panicked UNIFIL soldiers being escorted back to base on Tuesday after taking refuge(!) from the fighting. I'm sure this has done wonders for UNIFIL's image.

Let's go to the videotape (Hat Tip: Ashan)

Hi Carl.
why would Muslim Unifil troops stop other Muslims of shooting Jews?

Exactly.

Why in the world did Olmert and Livni imagine such troops would lift a finger to disarm Hezbollah? The fiction 1701 has changed things on the ground is not true. And some day, it will disappear forever.

I hate to say it, but I kind of agree with the UNIFIL Peacekeeper leaving the scene. If they offered first aid to the Lebanese Soldiers they would have been accused of being partial towards Lebanon, or even worse if they were caught by a stray bullet then there would be outcry against Isreal killing an UNIFIL Peacekeeper. Can you imagine the international press on that! On the other hand if they tried to disarm or stop the Lebanese Soldiers, then they Lebanon would cry foul because they prevented them from 'defending their territory' (even though we know that's not true). Best thing is for them to get out of there and confirm to the media that Lebanon shot first.
